Hey, i have a large property. I am looking at implementing a lot of boxes to help with the terrible onslaught of mosquitos. How many boxes per cluster and how far apart from one another in the same cluster? Also, how far apart should each cluster (mating pair) be from one another? Also, would installing boxes onto tree trunks be suitable? Also, what other birds would you recommend providing housing for to make an impact on mosquitos?
@MarksBackyardBirds2 күн бұрын
Nest boxes are wonderful when managed properly. The trouble with placing a lot of nest boxes is that you are making a commitment to monitor and maintain them. With a large property, hopefully you have some dead timber and limbs that provide natural nesting cavities. It also depends where you are, as to what species you can attract. A word of warning, very few birds eat mosquitos as they are active at night when birds are sleeping. Those who do eat them, Chimney Swifts, Whip-poor-wills, etc are not cavity nesting birds. Many cavity nesting birds like chickadees, wrens, bluebirds, and Purple Martins eat tons of insects and are super beneficial if you want to pursue those types of nesting structures.
@normalguy5562 күн бұрын
@MarksBackyardBirds mosquitos on my property are active no matter the time of day. I am okay with the amount of work, that is no issue. It gives me another excuse to walk the woods

@MarksBackyardBirds2 күн бұрын
@@normalguy556 I’m t is highly variable by species. Bluebirds are open country birds and the distance between boxes is recommended at 100 yards. House Wrens are super territorial and will break eggs of other birds. We typically cluster a few boxes together in a small area. They like areas of mixed woods and open. You may want to check out nestwatch.org by Cornell for tons of neat box information

What trees do yellow bellied sapsuckers go after?
@user-lz6dm5lk9y3 күн бұрын
Wow, they can "taste" the nutritional value of their foods! No wonder they turn up their beaks at "old" seed purchased at some stores! So, they cannot taste hot food, but just because they cannot taste it, does that mean it does not have an effect on their stomachs? As a human, I can taste hot foods, but even if I were unable to do so, those foods would still have a negative impact on my stomach. Is this not true for birds, too???

Hello I just bought the Little Fancy hummingbird feeder by Aspects. It has the three feeding ports and the question that I have is that the top doesn't set tight or securely on the bowl... like it doesn't snap down, I can lift the top and it comes off super easy. Is that how it is supposed to be? I went ahead and filled it and went to hang it up and any slight tilt, the liquid for the feeder runs out because it doesn't really seal to the bottom reservoir
@MarksBackyardBirds5 күн бұрын
@@cynthiajamison4006 Every fit is a little different. They are not made to snap, just sit. If nectar is coming out, you may be over filling. I never fill mine more than just past half full. Gotta thank you again. You're original video about picking the right birdseed has really helped us eliminate birds throwing out seed. We've done a lot of testing and came to the conclusion that here in the Poconos the best mix seems to be black oil sunflower seed, sunflower hearts and white millet proso. We do one part sunflower seed, one part sunflower hearts and 1/2 part white millet proso, nearly nothing thrown out anymore. A bit more money up front but shells and "paper" seem to be the only thing on the ground so in all reality is only a few dollars more every few months (we buy in bulk). As for bees, I never see any. I see tons of wasps, but I do not fill my fill my Hummer feeders to a high fill level, so wasps usually give up pretty quickly. I buy the black oil sunflower seed in the 25 lb bag. I buy the safflower in 5 lb. bag, and I buy thistle in 10 lb bag. I store all of my seed inside my home. So far, I have no had any problems with bugs. I have a large concrete bird bath in the. yard. I empty it every night. It think it could use a scrub. It is not bad at all, but it will get bad if I do not service it soon. I was going to use bleach and cover it so the birds cannot get into it. Does that sound okay? I will rinse well of course.

@icanseecornfromhere89198 күн бұрын
The previous 3 years since we moved to Northwest Indiana our feeders had almost no traffic at this point in summer. It'd be two weeks before the feeders were emptied. This year I cannot keep up. I fill them at 6:15 in the morning and by lunchtime half of the seed or more is eaten. I've about gone through a 50 lb bag of sunflower seed in a week... in addition to the peanuts, safflower and other specialty seed. It's been crazy. And this was before the flocks of blackbirds started showing up yesterday. I wonder if the cicadas had something to do with this, causing a spike in breeding and offspring or something. I love seeing it, though it's getting costly! $$$$
