I have a 2023 Rav4 Prime SE. On long road trips, I average 44 mpg. That's cruising at 55 mph, neutral wind conditions average terrain (some uphill, some downhill), with about 700 pounds of payload in the car (including weight of camping gear, and my own weight as the driver), and 38 psi in the OEM Dunlop tires. I'm happy with this fuel economy, Considering how un-aerodynamic the Rav4 is, and the fact that the curb weight is 4,400 pounds, 44 mpg is pretty amazing. The original 1996 Rav4 only got about 18 city, 22 highway, so Toyota has managed to more or less double the fuel efficiency of the Rav4 by making it a plug-in hybtid. I have not towed anything yet with mine, but I may get an Aliner camper - about 1,800 pounds - so I am looking at any videos I can find from owners who have towed with Rav4 Hybrids or Primes.

Got a quick question. When the video shows the back of your engine, above the spark plugs and a little to the right is a brass switch or sender with an electrical lead coming off it. What is that for? My engine just has a plug there is why I ask. Thanks

Great video, man! You’ve clearly done your research on every mod you’ve made. Any mods you wish you would’ve done differently (like different suspension, brakes, cooling, etc.)? I’m new to ISFs (I’ve only had mine for about two years) but before that, I owned an 05 EVO MR from new till 2022. AutoX’d the shit out of it for the first 6-7 years (and a couple dozen laps on the Nurburgring). Was content with the power of the stock turbo on pump gas tune, so I played around with suspensions (stock with various springs, BCs and then finally Ohlins) and tires and brakes. So I totally relate to your understanding of the different key components in hard driving.

I have a 2021 and am getting consistently 37-38 on ECO mode. I also don't accelerate as fast as I would really like to. I was getting mid-40s when I first got it, but that was when I was driving less highway. This hybrid, and most I believe, get much better mpg at slower speeds and stop and go actually. So, my guess is this guy probably drives a lot in the suburbs or similar (i.e. slower speeds)

I can give some pointers...we have had a Prius since 2010 then I 2022 got the RAV4 hybrid.....some of the things that help hybrids achieve great mileage is learning to stop smoothly and prolonged....then accelerate like like a normal car ..it's all about battery management....if you try to drive on battery only it will not help mpg on the long run ...40-45psi on all tires...and make sure they are putting 0-16 full synthetic at the dealership....some dealers are putting 5-20 or 0-20.... hybrids need thin syn oil...0-16... .these motors turn on rapidly on load therefore needing the thinnest oil for fast lube...plus thin oil helps with fuel economy.hope this helps ..we have friends that do this and also do mid to high 40s..... hope this helps...👍

The fuel economy for any Rav4 Hybrid or Prime is totally dependent on these six factors, in order by how much they influence the fuel consumption: 1. Driving speed. The vehicle's most efficient speed is around 45 mph. On level terrain, no headwind or tailwind, a Rav4 Prime can get about 51~52 mpg. At 55 mph, this drops to 45 mpg. At 65 mph, 37 mpg. At 75 mph, 32 mpg. 2. Wind. Assume you are cruising at 55 mph. A 10 mph head wind will cut your fuel economy from 45 to 40 mph. Conversely, a 10 mph tailwind might improve your fuel economy from 45 mpg to 49 mpg. 3. Terrain. Driving in mountainous terrain will reduce you trip average fuel economy. A 400 mile road trip from Red Bluff, California to Bakersfield California, almost all in flat terrain might average 45 mpg. But now let's say you are driving from San Francisco to Reno, Nevada, also 400 miles round trip, but now you have to drive over 7,800 ft. Donner Summit in both directions. That trip will probably come to only 37 mpg, because of the hill climbs. 4. Temperature. Summer driving yields slightly better mpg than winter. The traction battery loses some capacity in cold weather, and the colder, denser winter air places more drag on the vehicle at freeway speeds. 5. Weight. Loading the car with 1,000 pounds pf people and cargo increases the contact patch area of the tires, and thus increases the rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Heavily load in the vehicle also increases the fuel burn needed to accelerate away from stop signs, red lights, and you need more power to climb hills. 6. Tire pressure. Having underinflated tires is not only bad for the tires themselves - it causes them to run hot - it also hurts fuel economy. Keep your tires between 35~38 psi for OEM highway tires. If you have equipped the car with load range D all-terrains, run them at 50 psi on pavement (if the tire sidewall states 50 psi as the normal pressure).
