I can visualize that playing against each other in Montreal Big brother vs Little brother. Kenny, as Dick Irvin Jr. would refer to, was my favorite player... He was such a great goalie.

I'd love to see a future Habs goalie incorporate Dryden's mask onto his somewhere, like how Steve Shields paid tribute to Gerry Cheevers' on his.

Serge was the best defenseman in the 71 upset Stanely Cup series against the Bruins. He came out of nowhere to dominate. Sparking the offense with end to end rushes & defensively disrupting the Bruins offense. Everyone here talked about Dryden, but I think Serge was the difference maker.

Ken was such an amazing goaltender. I loved watching him. I’d watch him play, and not really watch the play, but focus on him stopping the puck. I tried to play my game after his style.

Remember meeting Ken Dryden, my sole idol, during the Habs parade in front of City Hall in Montreal in 79. I had just purchased a colorful autograph booklet and kindly asked him for one. To my astonishment, he just wouldn't give me one. I just stood there in awe, a 16 year old, heartbroken

People often forget how good the Montreal Canadiens were after Dryden retired. Look back at the standings and rosters from '80 on and you will perhaps be surprised to see that they had some excellent teams in there. I am absolutely certain that had Dryden not retired, or the Canadiens had acquired another top level goalie they very likely could have won another cup before '86.

It's incredible to me that people actually are ignorant enough about hockey to suggest that Dryden was "overrated" and that he only had success because of the teams that played in front of him. But I can tell you that just isn't true. He is actually underrated! He is absolutely among the top 2 or 3 goalies of all time and yet rarely is he mentioned whenever such a discussion happens!

As a Boston Bruins fan, while the Bobby Orr-led Bs won the Stanley Cup in '70 & '72, the main reason the Bs didn't 3-peat in '71 was because of Ken Dryden. The Bruins threw everything but the kitchen sink at Dryden, and he (largely) stone-walled them (even Orr & Esposito cited Dryden as the main reason they lost in '71). People can talk about Hasek or Brodeur as the GOAT, but give me Dryden as the GOAT.
@34Packardphaeton
@34Packardphaeton 4 жыл бұрын
I believe that the main reason for the Boston loss was their poor team defense. Yes, Dryden was a big factor, but hardly the only one. Esposito only scored 3 goals against the Habs in 7 games, and Orr only scored 5 ---- none of which were AFTER the 4th game.

@josamexico, never heard of him. He needs to move up from whatever weight class he's in and beat top talent whom people actually know. Now, I like Brandon Rios who has potential to be a long standing champion, but still has a ways to go before I sign off on him. Meanwhile no race is superior in fighting abilities. It's all about individual talent, skill, training and dedication. And that can be any race..

Aside from being one of the greatest goalies in hockey, he is name most synonymous with Cornell Big Red hockey, and his red #1 jersey now hangs from the rafters of Lynah Rink alongside Joe Nieuwendyk's #25. Though nearby Dryden, NY is not named after the hockey star, I find it fitting that he made his name near a village with his name at a school with the greatest hockey tradition in the NCAA.
