I know I'm quite a bit late to the party, but I saw a black snake (king snake?) climbing a tree in Indiana. I wasn't afraid or surprised by it, but I knew it was just going about it's business so i just watched it for about 15 minutes or so. It was definitely a great experience and i hope it'll happen again one day

Good ole black snake. I have a family that continues in my shop. The first time I met the black snake I named it Eboneezer ( ebony for black ). Well Eboneezer must have been a female for later on there were young ones showing up ( I named them Ebi Jr.'s ). So now some years later I have lost track of who is who and I do know once in a while the original Eboneezer I think shows up for he or she is huge and I just go and say hello and he or she gives me a look over and just rest over head keeping the shop clean of rodents and maybe some camel crickets also. Each beginning of Spring they and their new family show up, it is kinda the indicator Spring is officially here. We live in NC, and have a few copperheads that show up. They are very docile and we have helped a few that had unfortunately gotten trapped in garden netting ( of which we took down after discovering it is bad for snakes ). Not once has a copperhead tried to strike at us, even had to step over some when running on a trail and they just scooted out of the way. It is disturbing to us when people feel they have to kill these native species of snakes. Thanks for educating folks on these snakes !!!

The birds, loved ones of people, damn well have something to fear! How do you know black snakes don't carry disease? and bite you? or kill your pet mouse. How are docile black snakes keeping more dangerous copperheads away? OK, i believe you. Remember, black snakes may bite as a last resort if cornered.

Yes. They will eat your pet mice if they can. I talked to my doctor about non venomous snake bites...he could not find anything in literature that said it was any worse then a regular cut and to treat it as same.

I encountered one of these "little" guys up close a few years ago when hiking an old railroad bed. It was just sunning itself on some concrete and only moved when I went in close to take some pics, with little more than a tail rattle to let me know where to stop. Ten minutes later a big garter snake scared the bleep out of me when it zipped past me on the trail.

I live up in Alberta, so generally snakes aren’t around in the cold. I did spot one in Jasper, since they apparently like hanging out in the mountains, which is weird since it’s still a cold climate. Being pretty ignorant about snakes in general, the one thing that surprised me was how fast they cruise. I lost it in the bushes before I even had a chance to catch up!

All Garters? Or specific ones like Easterns or Prairies?? In my area of SouthEastern Alberta, specifically the Plains Desert BadlLands, which consists of my Remote City of Medicine Hat AKA TeePee City, plus the Northerly Connected Larger Town Of Redcliff (pop. 8,000), the Smaller Southern connected Town of Dunmore (pop. 2,750), and the Village of 7 Persons (pop. 900) that is just 5mins East of the City Airport, all of which are seperated but connected by over 100km of beautiful inter-city walking/biking Trails with beautiful Creeks and Coulees seperating almost every Neighborhood, and spreading the City out making it seem like its Larger City of 150,000 but it actually only has a Regional Mini-Metro City Population of about 90,000 ppl along with the Large South Saskatchewan River Canyon/Valley and all the Large Nature Parks with Marshes and The Stunning City Pathways/Bikeways and Trails System connecting everything makes for a beautiful hike throughout the city with a range of animals right in the City, from Deer o Coyotes and Bullfrogs to Rattlers, and "supposedly" we have "Hybrids" that consist of mainly Garters/Bull Snakes, Garters/Rattlesnakes, and Bull/Rattlesnakes. I say supposedly because i personally dont know, but ive seem these big azz monsters, some very large wierd ones that look like Hybrids, in the Late-Spring to Mid-Fall its not uncommon to see a Big Fat BullSnake with a mix of Garter Coloring Stretching across the Entire Popular Large 5-8Foot Pathways getting sun amd they have no Fear of the public and seeing long dead ones from a Bike Tire squishing them, and 30 mins to the South of my city and about 30mins North of the Montana Border we have a Large 100km×40ishkm Incredible Provincial Park with a mysterious "Pop Up" Small Forested Mountain Range consisting of about 5-8ish 400-1400meter Forested Hills and Small Mountains called Cypress Hills, with many lakes, streams, and water ecosystems with Turtles and All kinds of Edible fish, 100s of KMs of hiking trails, wildlife like Bobcats, Wolves, Blackbears, Coyotes, Foxes, Wolverines, Badgers, Buffalo, Deer, Antelope, wild horses, bull snakes, garters, rattlers, tree frogs, toads, bull frogs and all sorts of birds like Eagles, Hawks, and a few species of Owls. Such a Unique Remote Forested/BadlLands mix of an area with a Remote Urban Centre close by. Anyways, off track lol can these snakes Inter-Breed? Creating Venomous Hybrids? Ive seen Huge Bulls easily over 6ft and as round as a 2litre bottle and 4 foot garters

Just found your video. Very interesting. I live in SW Ohio. I recently reached down to my mower to remove grass and next thing, my right hand was at my shoulder, my left hand was retracting and there was a snake striking towards me, not at me but towards me and there were no fangs. The coloring was spot on a rattle snake, except the background color was black, not brown or tan or grey. I also had a black snake come out from under a pickup. Thing is, this thing was the size of a Timber Rattle Snake. 5' long and as big around as my calf. I think this snake was eating squirrels.

@@natureatyourdoor After doing some searching, I found pictures of Black (or very dark) Timber Rattlesnakes, also of the size I seen. I think that is the snake. It was not threatened, it was just moving out of the way as we rolled the truck onto the car hauler. Fortunately Snakes cannot hear someone pooing themselves ;) I think that is what the guy with the person picking up my truck did when he seen the size of the snake. In retrospect, my policy of not permitting visitors to interact with snakes around my house/barn (leave the rodent control alone please) probably prevented something from happening.
