Doctors to Buddy Rich wheeling him in to the operating room "Mr. Rich, is there anything bothering you?" Buddy: "Yes, country music" (true story) Another true story: I'm 62. As a 13 year old, I had a drum set with a drum head on one of the tom toms signed by Gene Krupa (legendary drummer big band era 30s to 40s). I went to a Buddy Rich big band concert in the park in the summer and brought the head hoping Rich would sign it. He was standing at his station wagon behind the bandstand talking to a gentleman signing autographs, and I was on line. I noticed he was using a HUGE black marker to sign and wasn't really looking what he was doing, as he was talking to a man. I was worried he'd grab the drum head and sign over Gene Krupa. So when my turn came, and he went to grab the head, I pulled it back. He stopped his conversation and looked at me like "what kid?". I politely requested he be careful not to sign over Gene Krupa. He took the head, slowly, looked at it, considered for a moment, then signed BUDDY RICH in giant writing taking up the rest of the head so nobody else would be able to sign it. Handed it back to me with that big toothy smile on his face. Sadly, I no longer have that drum head from 50 years ago.

....and, he was in his 60's when this was recorded. Even at that age he was better than anyone. I believe he had a heart attack right after this display.

Never been a better drummer than Buddy Rich. You should look up an old Tonight Show clip of a drum off between Buddy and Shawn Hennessy, the Tonight show drummer. Whether you do a reaction or not, you'd like the performance.

He holds the sticks in the traditional way. Buddy was a child prodigy raised during the vaudeville era (there’s a picture of him as a child standing next to a bass drum n is about as high) Prodigy plus hard scrabble years plus working through one nighters , big band era, golden years of movies onward. Unmatched! Saw him once after this was filmed. He’s amazing!!
