I suppose he means that it was seeing The Sex Pistols that inspired Joe to leave the 101ers (or be prepared to leave when he was asked to join The Clash). The only other "favour" I can think of was John arranging for a Teddy Boy--a really huge guy--to ambush Joe in the toilet of a club and beat him up (further breaking Joe's teeth, I think). Not much of a favour.
