While Jimmy Webb wrote the song, Amy (or producer Brown Bannister) made a couple of changes that makes it transcendent. One of them is repeating the last line three times and ending the last line in a whisper which makes it seem to be the last breathe of the person reminiscing followed by the long pause in the music, which symbolizes her death. The music resuming indicates the world goes on repeating the cycle of others going on with life and starting their own family. It is beautiful, sad, and hopeful at the same time.

Seems most have forgotten that he actually co-wrote the song with a young lady named Nancy Griffith. She died yesterday at age 68. And she did so much more. Thank you, Ms. Griffith.
