I used to have Oval Rotor Rings, they were awesome for a long while, zero issues. Then there was that one day, my Oval ring kept on dropping chain during every shift on the front mech, that was the day I decided I was just done with Oval. I did realize the power gain and less fatigue. It took a little while to get used to the Round Rings again. However, I have never looked into Oval again unless the bike is a 1x. My chain drop experience was with DuraAce 7900 group 10+ years ago. I have always wondered if I had that set up again in the modern Di2, if that would resolve the chain-drop issue, Although I wondered many times, I am still not willing to try again. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, it’s an issue with your power meter and probably not your hip.

You've got some work to do to sort your imbalances out. The chain rings wont solve anything. Nor is there any evidence to prove that they create any power improvement. Absolute Black isnt a great company either

are there different oval implementations. Like 2:05 looks like the oval is ~120° off the crank whereas in others it seems to be more like at 60°

In the tests I've seen they never say what sizes they are using, a 32t round, vs a 32t oval is an unfair advantage, I call a 32t oval a part time 34t because of the height.. just go from a 32t round to a 34t round and you'll see a good improvement.. people changing from a 32t round to a 32t oval should see a difference, its TRICKNOLOGY !!! it sells stuff, I'm waiting for oval wheels...;) !!! Pro rider Dylan Johnson rode oval 2 years now what does he ride on? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNp6ash63te1YHk.html

I purchased this lake shoe in 2021. What a difference in comfort. I have a broad foot so happy to have found lake shoes. I purchased them from RXM Custom, being able to try shoes on to obtain the correct size. Great service from them.

I think your glutes should be doing the pulling --- the scraping the mud off your feet and pulling part from about 5 to 7 o'clock whereas your quads will be pushing most at from about 3 to 5 (but also if you sit far back, earlier allowing one to push over the top, from about 12 to 3 as well). I think that the "smaller muscles" don't really do much. But, as you say, the big part of oval at around the 4-5 allows for greater power output when the main muscles are working, (both pushing and pulling) and less when there there aren't. This allows people to put a bit more power out, I guess, and makes the bike more suited to the rider. Shimano Biopace did the opposite, taking the strain off the main muscles and requiring power in the dead part of the stroke. I guess that they were 1) for old people (like me) who want to put less strain on their knees and 2) to train people to pedal more smoothly so that the rider becomes more suited to the bike. I am surprised that you did not Biopace (rotate) your AbsoluteBlacks if you had hip pain, but it worked. I see that there are Litepro ovals very cheap from China but I am scared that I will not be able to set up the front derailleur. The microphone you use from 5:34 is so good I thought I had swapped from my headset to speakers, or had you in the room.

Just fitted them to my road bike, if you want proof they work pedal with one leg; You really feel the effect of being able to maintain a full circular pedal stroke.

Most pain issues are the result of muscle imbalances or poor bike set up. I tried oval chainrings for a few years and found they made no difference to my muscles. What I did get was a lot of chainsuck issues which is really annoying and can damage your frame. To be fair to Absolute Black, I had chainsuck mainly with Rotor chainrings and not the AB ovals.

I get the impression oval chainrings suit a spinner more than a big gear grinder. Cadence is surely more facilitated as a result.

For me it actually slowed my cadence slightly, as the emphasis is on the push phase of the pedal stroke.

Thanks for the video! I felt the same on my first ride today, a kind of pulsating feeling, but it quickly disappeared. Lately, I'm also experiencing some right hip pain, so I hope these oval rings will help alleviate that. Also, switching from Ultegra 52/36 to AbslouteBlack 46/30 should help on steep climbs.

2 things! Soreness on 1 leg maybe due to height differences between legs. Sometimes we bikefit the wrong leg! Try shims to see if goes away. 2nd! Performance improvements are easy to demonstrate. Get indoors. Get power. Run both systems and prove the one you are selling uses less watts to maintain the same rider at 40 km or such.
@reborn9299

Thanks for you interest Frank. I’ve had a thorough bike fit with the OrbisLab. There no structural leg length discrepancy. Some imbalance in functional movement patterns. So no need for shims. This review is not sales material and solely to document my experience. Plus there is existing research in this area if that’s what your looking for. The take home is that oval chainrings change the way the load is experienced through your legs. For me that resulted in different muscle recruitment and therefore helped overactive muscles to relax. However, I believe there is a place for both circular and ovals on ones armoury as to help develop different peddling technique. Thanks again for your comment. 👍

You did not understand the reasoning for oval chainrings. Of course, you will still have to apply the same amount of power (on average over one rotation) as you do with circular chainrings. But with oval chainrings a bigger portion of the load can be provided by your bigger, stronger, more efficient muscles. The effect, therefore, isn't increased efficiency of the bike, but rather increased efficiency of the cyclist. Which is much harder to demonstrate. In other words: Oval chainrings only make sense when power can not easily be supplied at a constant rate, but comes in waves.

Vas I do the same, curl my toes 🤦🏽‍♂️. Wondering if my current shoes are too big. Looking for a new pair. Hence why I'm here lol. I ordered the lake cx218 but the those were really tight on my foot... their shoe size guide doesn't seem to be accurate at all. So sending them back and looking for a new pair. According to my foot measurement my foot isn't a wide, standard size or a few cm bigger... but for some reason they seem wide in every shoe I wear. Not specific to cycling lol.
