The thing about Upstate NY is that if you leave a place like Utica for the Adirondacks... you never want to go back. You want to live up there lol. It's just perfect. I lived not too far away for many years. A lot of family trips to Enchanted Forest. Which eventually turned into a summer job. Good times!

I just spent a weekend railfanning and riding behind 1309. Awesome locomotive, and cool to see how she originally arrived there and in what condition. So glad they were able to restore her.

What makes no sense to me is that in spite of it having a series of over-fire air jets bolted to the firebox, it routinely runs under its own big black cloud. Massive fuel waste, massive point source of air pollution. At times it appears that its stoker spits bursts of bituminous coal, not at all stabilizing conditions of the fire. Crack the fire-door for secondary air! IMO a big public relations black eye.

I remember back when the Western Maryland RR employed hundreds in shops and yards in Ridgeley WV. Across the river in Cumberland there were thousands working for the B&O. These weren't seasonal tourism gigs they were high paying careers with a pension and livelihood to raise a family. That's when the Queen City was worth living in!!!

Year 2021 and 1309 is finally running. Wow what a major difference from when she was at the museum to now. All the volunteers have done an excellent job to bringing her back.

I am just simply amazed about how much that locomotive has changed. Its restoration is nearly complete.
