As a long time subscriber and huge fan of your work, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for this! I’m part way through building it… I’ve tweeked the sizes as I’ve already got a big bag of 6mm loose tenons, and I’ve found a great manufacturer of router bits and other tools called RENNIE TOOLS near Manchester. Most suppliers only sell 6.3mm diameter cutters - which would be too sloppy - but they do several spiral up cut models at exactly 6mm. Could be a useful contact for you, as I know you ship router bits with your flat pack loose tenon kits 😊

Hi Peter, have you ripped much solid timber with yours? I didn’t have high expectations for being able to do this, but when I got a rip blade unfortunately it was way worse than i expected, since I found the thin blade flexes uncontrollably (almost felt like a harmonic / resonance issue - I was going pretty gentle with it). Was never sure if this was a ‘just me’ issue with the particular blade I had - but I’ve moved to ripping on a small bandsaw, which is actually preferable anyway.

Only some pine/Redwood with the stock blade. Not something I really do tbh, so not an issue for me. 👍

Hello Peter, I just saw your video. Since it has been out for a while, you've surely found a solution for the profiles that accept Festool-type clamps, but just in case, I'm giving you my solution anyway. On the Systeal website, they sell Series 30 B type profiles that accept these clamps directly without any modification. As for me, I only have Veiko brand clamps bought from Banggood, and they fit very well on them. Maybe this information will be useful to you. Thank you for your videos, which are very pleasant to watch. Thierry

Love your vids Peter! In Australia we only have access to 18 or 25mm MR MDF. If making large 2000 x 450mm cabinet doors, which thickness would you recommend using?

25mm at that height. I had problems with 18mm bowing at 1900, they all went away when I switched to 22mm. With 25mm I’d be tempted to use a 9mm panel. 👍

Hi Peter. Different topic, does the record air scrubber really work? I mean do notice a much cleaner work air. Or are they a bit of a waste of time and need something a bit more? They just seem a bit kitchen extractor level?
@10MinuteWorkshop

It's very good, many times better than a kitchen extractor! I think they all do a similar job - Rutlands, Axminster, Record etc... - but I have an air quality monitor and the particulate levels really drop when the air scrubber is on. 100% recommended for a unit like this in a workshop of this size. 👍

Hello and thank you for your videos- We watched your other Bosch vs Festool 3 part series too. I am just a do-it-yourself homeowner - I have 25 year old plywood with maple veneer kitchen cabinet boxes and curly maple cabinet doors that I am refinishing. They were never stained but just had a polyurethane coating which had turned dark with age and had started to scuff away and chip quite a lot over the years. I used a chemical stripper to take off all the finish on the doors and on the base shelf areas of the cabinet boxes. I then bought the Festool RTS 400 and used that to sand all the cabinet doors first with 120 and then 150. I have been using their mesh sandpaper. I then hand sanded at 150 with the Festool hand sanding block. I hook the power sander and hand sanding block to the CT-15 dust extractor. I now have to sand many areas of the cabinet boxes- the largest section that will need to be sanded is a continuous area of the backs of 4 cabinet boxes that are screwed into each other. None of these cabinet boxes have been stripped using a chemical stripper so I have to use a sander to take the finish off. Once again, these boxes are plywood with maple veneer. I can get the finish off with the 120 mesh sandpaper and RTS 400 sander but not sure if I should buy the ETS EC sander for this purpose or continue using the RTS 400 as I did for the cabinet doors that were previously stripped. I also did not use a chemical stripper on the cabinet plywood shelves and just sanded off the old finish with the RTS 400. It took quite long but It worked. I am not a regular woodworker but I wanted to do the best that I could with my own limited skillset. Love to hear your thoughts on whether I should buy the ETS EC sander for the cabinet boxes or continue using the RTS 400. I'm a bit lost and thought Id ask you for your advice. I'm afraid that the random orbit ETS EC sander will go through the veneer. Thanks a ton again...
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Күн бұрын
Hi and thanks! The RTS 400 is a small orbit (2mm from memory) orbital sander - so great for finishing work, not so fast at stripping a finish from a larger area, as you discovered. But I'd be very cautious about using a larger orbit (5mm) RO sander to take the finish off a veneered cabinet as commercial veneers are often only around 0.5mm thick, so it's easy to overcook it and sand through the veneer - at which point it's game over. You could try taking the bulk of the finish off with the ETSEC and use the RTS 400 for the final couple of passes? Or look at the 3mm stroke version of the ETS EC - but then you'd have a larger finishing sander which you may not have that much use for after the cabinet project is complete. The RO sander would definitely be faster though. Hope that helps and best of luck with it. 👍

What's your preference between dashboard and bench dogs uk? I see bench dogs has an alignment jig... how does that function? I use both 3/4 and 20mm dogs with both festool and makita rails (makita offers a 118" ~2998mm rail which is useful for US 4x8 sheets). I'm wanting to replace my table saw and have been watching videos for years... yours included. I have several centipede workstations including the largest and smallest with 20mm and 3/4 dog hole tops and am wanting to make a knock-down 'cover' style top with some extrusions on the sides for clamp and some handles routed in to remove material for weight reduction and portability. I'll probably end up with a stationary 4x8, portable 4x4, and even possibly 4x2 to use as an outfeed support with a stock bora top.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Күн бұрын
Generally they're both of excellent quality, but the Dashboard hinge is much more expensive to get outside of the US as we get hit for import duties. The Benchdogs and Dashboard approach is different, the Dashboard more of a traditional rail hinge that needs an extrusion for it to fit to, whereas the Benchdogs sits flat on the MFT surface and locates with quad style bench dogs, so ideal for using with an MFT top rather than a full bench with extrusion or T-tracks. The benchdogs template makes it easy to bore out the extra holes for the hinge fixings, with several several positions to choose from. More details on the benchdogs website. 👍

I heard Sedge say that Festool originally planned to replace their cordless orbital [sheet] sander with their newer cordless delta sander (the thought being that the latter can do everything and more than the former), but that feedback from larger cabinet shops saved the sheet sander because they wanted both (using the sheet sander for "open" sanding and using the delta INSIDE cabinets to get closer to edges, for example). That made me wonder if perhaps the ideal two-sander combination for the non-professional cabinet maker might be a 150mm (6 inch) random orbital sander and a delta sander.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Күн бұрын
I have a delta sander but rarely use it; the RTS400-sized orbital sander does pretty much everything I need. 👍

I'd just say to have a think about what the solution is that you want to solve; after a bit of time with it I decided that it was too big for the space I have, and too small of a work area for what I'd like to use one for. Also, slow and noisy. An 'enthusiast' grade of CNC like the Ooznest is brilliant if you need one-offs like signs and plaques, or maybe half a dozen of something; it turned out that I either need 1 or 2 of something, or 100+. The 1 or 2 I could make on a bandsaw and sander faster than I could draw it up, let alone set the machine running. and for 100+ it's worth getting someone else with an industrial grade machine to do them for me. Hope that makes sense! Peter

@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 күн бұрын
I use the Festool bit, but I had a precision engineer pal grind it down slightly to get a really snug fit. I've had decent results with the trend; all routers generally make a slightly oversized hole / looser fit with a 20mm bit because of the run-out in the collet, though it does vary router to router. Try running it at the slowest practical speed and you should get a better fit. 👍

Neat design, neat material, though you said it so fast it took me a while to find it was called Valchromat :-) correct me if wrong, but there's no 3 holes 96mm spaced at 90 degrees, right? @@10MinuteWorkshop Yeah, saw you say that under another comment reading through and replied there too :-) I will counter that with this: 3 hole jig is enough - you can accurately make a jig of your own with a 3 hole jig - one hole at a time to make the jig that lets you drill however many at a time you want. Obviously more is better but 3 is the minimum upon which you can build a mountain :-D

I’ve ordered a few items from KZfaq vendors and had some bitter experiences. A big time channel sold a router table that I had to pretty much remanufacture. Mine must have been the last before they changed the bit and tap. 3/10 Very pleased with Peter’s product. Time from order to receipt was exceptional. Packaging was excellent. I'm notoriously a bit of a tight arse but this jig looks like really good value for money wheb you consider the jigs it replaces, the cost of those individually and the time it saves making each from scratch.
