Dear Class of 2024, For a long time, I was unsure whether or not I had the right to stand here. My fellow law colleagues who have spoken before me have mostly explained their study tips. Thus, I decided instead to talk about something more important than studying: HILS life. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “law school?” Competition? Internships? How to get a good grade? Until I came to law school, this is how I have lived my life. As a foreign national in the United States, during my middle and high school years, I continuously pushed myself to get the best grades to go to the best schools to secure the best internships. There was nothing but a competition to be the best. When I heard of HGU, I heard that HGU doesn’t emphasize competition, people share their outlines, and the Christian community was such a wonderful place. Thus, dreaming of the Garden of Eden, I returned to Korea. However, unlike my expectations, the first semester at HILS was filled with case briefs and call-on, which caused significant stress for so many of my peers. I personally took digestive pills before torts and ran to the bathroom many times. Everyone was busy, living their busiest lives. There were many times when I doubted the path I had chosen and wished to give up. However, my colleagues and I supported each other one day at a time, and we finished our first semester. Friends of mine call us the “RPOP” (reasonable person of ordinary prudence). Thus, if I’m stressed out, others are stressed out as well. If others are happy, I will be happy as well. By that logic, if I have to pull an all-nighter to get my case briefs done, my classmate next to me is crying his eyes out in his room for the same reason. Whenever you feel tired, shout “I am the RPOP!” In my second semester, I have collapsed countless times, more so than ever before in my life. I don’t wish anyone sitting here today to undergo the same fate here, which is why I am standing here today. If there is anyone who is undergoing something similar to me, just contact me and I will be a good listener, and we will find a solution together if possible. Everyone else seems to be pushing ahead with their lives, but I felt like I was slowly being left behind. I got on my knees and begged the Lord Almighty to give me the boldness to grow as a person. I am too weak to stand alone. I don’t know if coming here and crying and pondering whether the path I took is wrong, everyone else is busily working their way up, but I’m just being left behind. I didn’t know what made me happy, I didn’t know what was pushing me through this ordeal, so I hung on to God and prayed every day. One day, I even told the good Lord that I could no longer handle it. This is the end. There were times when I went to Dean Lee and told him I wanted to take a semester off. Of course, I wanted to say on the surface that this path was the one that God chose for me, that God walks beside me, and I wanted to shout that everything is okay. However, the reality was very harsh, dark, and scary. I wanted to give up everything. There was no one next to me, all my family was in Seoul, and the only place, I could go to, was the beach in Youngildae. So I went to Youngildae Beach every night to walk, to look for an answer, and I was so lonely. In Ecclesiastes 4:12, there is a verse that is my favorite verse; Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Alone, you will fall countless times and will lose. I would also not be here if it weren’t for my classmates who listened to my worries, prayed for me, worried themselves sick about me, and cared about me. There will come times when you stumble, fall, and find yourselves lonely and tired. Look around you. Everyone is tired. We are not here to compete amongst ourselves but to sympathize and love each other. In the Bible, it says to love your neighbor as we love ourselves. If someone stumbles, please don’t think “I’ve just passed one competitor, I’m not going to fail.” We have to take our fellow classmates with us, rather than leave them behind. When you fall over, someone will be there for you. When I fell, my neighbor gave me strength, and thus I want to reciprocate to those around me. I believe this is what God was talking about when he said the light and salt of this earth. Rather than competing against each other, I want us to help and support our classmates. And rather than gossiping and fighting, I want us to embrace and forgive one another as a community. Knowing God, walking together step by step, and accomplishing our goals with patience instead of rushing ahead and being unaware of others, - this is what makes Handong special and attractive. These values also show the power of cooperation as God’s gift to us. We would not be here and have met without God’s guidance. I want to take this time to welcome you to HILS, a space that is both like the wilderness and the Garden of Eden. To share a few studying tips, do not procrastinate, and finish your assigned reading and case briefing daily. It is helpful to reference the senior students’ outlines, but nothing beats reading and finishing it yourself. For midterms and finals, you would have to read them all over. So, it is best to read them thoroughly and do case briefings throughout the semester. If you made your own outline, you would not need to read over all the notes but just review your notes. Again, an outline made by yourself is the best because it is familiar to you and facilitates memorization. I also recommend writing out the rules. I hope that rather than focusing on surviving through grit and studiousness, the Class of 2024 would work together so that no one will be left behind. Thank you for listening.
