Nice video: I just picked up a 2017 Crockett with the 32mm stock (team issue) tires. For your gravel setup: Djd the 42mm have any clearance issues (paint scratches, mud, etc)? Do you have the SKU for the 42mm tires?

really like your video, it further convinced me to change my fork. I was hesitating between the RockShox and the Fox 34 at 120mm, and finally, I’ve decided to go all the way like you did. I bought the Chisel Comp but in the 2022 model. I plan to upgrade the brakes to XT instead of the Level. I’ll also switch to GX for the transmission and change the saddle, which I find uncomfortable.. thanks agai 😉👍

thanks for sharing - sold my Ridley X-Ride a few years back (dedicated CX bike that I was also riding on gravel mostly + some CX) and bought a Orbea Terra, more dedicated gravel bike that might be OK for CX (I can't vouch for this yet, not enough events in post-COVID). I had thought about getting a more strict CX bike with CX type geo but from your feedback it sounds like avoiding the Crockett is the best idea. It kind of sucks because at this point there really are dedicated affordable CX bikes left, gravel has taken over....

Interesting feedback on the Crocket. I have a 2016 Boone SRAM Force1X that I absolutely love for cross and fast gravel. I thought mine had the same geo as the Crocket. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam and the 56cm, 110mm stem, 40mm bars and 170mm cranks fits like a glove. I actually love the ride for cross as mine feels very nimble. Mine feels more like a crit bike if that makes sense. Whereas my Checkpoint definitely feels like a grand tour bike. Anyway, was thinking of getting a Crocket as a pit bike, but need to recheck the geo charts.

I actually just bought a Trek Crockett built off of the Miami Green frame. Built up for gravel with really solid components. SRAM Force groupset, cranks, brakes, Roval Control SL wheels with DT Swiss 350 hubs, Bontrager carbon drop bars, S works carbon seat post. Clocks in at just over 18lb complete. Absolutely rips on gravel and for me, I don't have the resources nor space to have multiple bikes, so I needed something versatile. I am not a competitive rider, so being "ok to good" in road and gravel categories still suits my needs very well. I plan to buy a dedicated carbon road wheelset at some point, but I'm otherwise very happy with it so far. Plus the colorway is sick!

Nice ride! I'm approaching my fifth season on my Chisel. I've been running a dropper with a Fox StepCast fork at 100mm. I still love the bike and ride it more than my Epic Evo. I have done plenty of gravel rides and just chuckle at my friends who still insist on riding a drop bar gravel bike, and then put on a dropper, a fork, fatter tires etc. My Chisel is so much more comfortable, stable, and cheaper. It's such a fun, versatile bike. It really renders drop bar gravel bikes redundant while also being a blast on singletrack.

I’ve built up mine with the same “evo” concept, using a SID120 upfront, a Deore groupset, and XM1700 wheelset. I use double Rekons most of the year. I totally aggree with everything you said here :) It’s a super versatile, but still very fast XC/light trail bike that’s perfect for 95% of my local terrain. It doubles as a gravel bike if I put my carbon wheels with Race Kings on it. I also 100% aggree with all those youtubers saying that for european gravel, a hardtail is a much better bet 9 out of 10 times. We just don’t really have the Dirty Kanza type terrain that gravelbikes were originally created for. European offroad terrain is twisty and undulating most of the time, which really plays to the strengths of an XC bike imho.

Great video. I have a Rockhopper Comp 2021, with MicroShift 1x9. It serves me well on urban use + mid level trail riding. The problem is the suspension. It’s coil and heavy. I’m wondering if I should simply upgrade the fork to something like a RockShox Recon or if it would make more sense to sell the bike and buy another, like a Chisel or Trek X Caliber 9. What would you do?
@michaelthompson1640
@michaelthompson1640 Жыл бұрын
I'd sell the bike and get a chisel, because it has better geometry and boost spacing. No matter how much money you put into your Rockerhopper it will never get to the level of the chisel. Baseline chisel will be a great start for you to build on.

That's a tough call but I would get a chisel just because the level that you can take it too will be higher than the Rockhopper. I have recently started working for an online bike shop and the Allez Sprint is pretty much the non plus ultra for all those who race. Personally, I've been dreaming of this bike for 4 years and am thinking about joining the waiting list for the new frameset, which now costs as much as the complete bike did back then. No shit, is the same price as the 2018 Allez Sprint Comp but without drivetrain, wheels etc. It's a bit crazy when you think about it.
