I feel like a central concept of connoisseurship is being amateur, in the non-pejorative sense.

I think you're right that the word connoisseurship is generational. It's been replaced with "geek" which is fair. It has also been democratized because now you can be a wine geek or an opera geek. Geek is no longer an insulting term. A geek is just somebody who knows something about something. A dork is still an insulting term and usually it's earned since dorks are almost always rude and mean as well awkward.

I used time to explain connoisseurship to financial people when I temped in their offices by saying it was the difference between investing and trading.

The Clara Peters painting of the raw eggs on a table? That painting is astounding. But I had no idea it was genesis of the museum.

No coverage of The Bellilli Family? It's not Olympia in importance but wow, the tension in that family, the oldere daughter looking to her dad. Her dad being excluded...it's amazing. It was on my bucket list for years and when I went to Paris it was out on loan. I was thrilled to see it in that show.

YOU GET LOST IN A RENOIR. AN INTIMATE EXPERIENCE. SIMPLY, SPECTACULAR!

The originator of this "movement" decided he would choose a male, white artist to denigrate. He was trying to point out the white, male favoritism in the art world when it comes to the classics. He then chose Renoir. His original thought is not without merit. Yet he put the cart before the horse, making his opinion meaningless. And these protestors should really know better than to support someone with an agenda.

What’s is this hatred for a great artist when there are thousands of crazy modern art going for millions. Some may not like his art but lot of people do.

I’m glad the shark work was made but it has not aged well historically. When I look at it I just think of Hurst work as big money art for collectors to buy. No shock value left to it.

The Legend Of Zelda is NOT procedurally generated wtf lol. The levels are all designed and the landscapes/terrain as well. Everything is handcrafted. The game (BOTW & TOTK) massive world and the art are designed, drawn, painted, made by human artists. It’s not procedural. There’s only one world. Zelda is NOT a procedurally generated game.

What a load of rubbish. The priority should have been to adhere to the intent of the will, which was to have it on display in Austria. And, if it was true that her niece deserved and wanted the painting of her aunt so much because of sentimental value, then why, right after acquiring it, did she sell it immediately? Why, at least, didn't she hold on to it until she passed away? Couldn't even wait that long. Money is the reason ($135mil). Btw, the reason it is "worth" so much, is mostly due to the Austrian museum and their promotion of it over the decades since the war. If it had always been in private hands, it would be worth a fraction of that.

It's off to criticize a person who experienced failure/ hardship as an artist, & then progressed on to be an art critic expert/ seeing tons of art, for writing about art/ being an artist. My daily Word this morning, spoke how it is the negativity, the hardships, that allow us to then experience the goodness of God, as pointed out by great thinkers over the ages. Light shines in darkness. It is precisely because Jerry Saltz experienced the hardship / failure side of art, that he can have some insight into the pitfalls, as well as the hope, toward having the life in art that you are called to. I cherish his book on How to Be an Artist, (that I'm currently reading). I can use all the help I can get, from many sources. I especially need his 'Get to work you big baby,' because I've done tons of college study, research, period of discernment; study of how to have an art practice; many bus rides to carry one 90 lb bag of cement home at a time; & prep in every possible way, & I'm just about to get started with an ongoing, never ceasing art practice. So glad to hear the #1 thing I'm missing. ha ha. LOL. Blessings everyone. Peace. Love wins. Jesus is real. I've seen proof! Ask me how i know. Love you art people everywhere. God is good.

The moment these twits start to talk about abstract art they simply highlight their own shadow fatuous personalities. 90% of it is nothing worth talking about. It's decoration - decorative art.

It’s why the artists loved the idea of NFTs so estates don’t have to compromise. Licensing does takes away from the mystique & legend.
