@@garycousino4016 Mrs. Teresa was my elementary substitute teacher for years I've known her my whole life this is my hometown. Me, my sister and my brother grew up here my mom was born and raised here and to answer your question about Mr hicks yes she married 1 of his sons. As a little girl I swam in the original hot springs in the early 80's before what people see nowadays.

@@kellettmargaret7 First time I came up there to paddle the river was 78 or 79. Most of the buildings in town were vacant. Used to camp at Rocky Bluff campground. Must had been around 1990 we came across the bridge and saw a piece of plywood propped up against a tree that said campground. One of Mr Hicks sons was in the process of removing junk cars from back behind the gas station. Had maybe half a dozen camp sites cleared. We stayed there instead of Rocky Bluff and hired Genes son to run shuttle for us. That went on for several years. Sometimes we would have 20+ folks in our group staying there. Hot Springs really took off after the campground .

I'm proud to be from, and live in Madison county NC! It's full of history and of course, this beauty. Still takes my breath away every day! Great work capturing a new perspective, I'm surprised you haven't been featured anywhere locally yet. Beautiful footage. Do you do certain locations by private request? I have an area in Madison county that is beautiful, but I'm trying to get a better idea of the trails and old roads, homesites etc. I've considered buying a drone, but one that is operable by a noob and takes high quality video is out of my proce range. I had considered hiring a pro/hobbyist to check out the area from above. Email at [email protected] me if you might be interested! Or check me out on instagram and shoot me a dm @bonezcustoms I'd love to see more if these videos one way or the other!

Great video. I wonder where I may see the rest? I travel to Shelton laurel almost every weekend just to be in the area. You can literally feel this history in those mountains. I live about 5 mins from the rural heritage museum in Mars Hill, can the rest of this video be viewed there? Any further info is much appreciated. Jim Brown

Thanks for this documentary, well done. As many other people, I'm a direct descendant of people involved. My gg grandfather was in Mcelroy home guard, and was shot and killed by Joseph Shelton right after the war. Also had uncles, cousins in the 64th. Hope you can make more of these. Such a ugly time for everyone in the mountains. Thanks again!

Edward, I tried really hard to make it show the whole county. This video mostly shows the images from my first book "Madison County From Above" which includes several images from Marshall, Mars Hill, Hot Springs and other areas throughout the county. My new book "Madison County From Above, Volume 2" has about 27 additional images including Frozen Marshall, Redmon Dam, Barnard, Mountain Island, White Rock and more. Its available at ryanphillips.media Thank you for your interest Edward.
