I have been a keen amateur fisherman since I can remember, I am 75 now and have fished most of Australia, South East Asia, the barrier reef, Solomons, New Guinea, and several other Pacific Islands and I still learn something from your video every week. I have never before seen anyone use prawns on a squid jig! I have of course used the prawn-shaped jigs but never thought it through. I spent my formative years around Port Phillip and fished the huge squid and cuttlefish there using jigs and a mullet for bait as the fluoro jigs and the prawn-shaped jigs had not been invented then. The squid in the waters just inside the rip entrance to Port Phillip used to just fit in a Nally bin in those days and were prolific. I guess we used mullet as that was their natural catch there as large prawns did not exist in the cold water. My point is to thank you once again for sharing and proving that an old dog can still learn new tricks.

Thank you. Like yourself, I hadn't heard of squid jigs until recent years. Prior to that I used a more brute force approach :-) I really enjoy chasing them on jigs now though, wish I had started earlier.

Noting a comment about a mark at the time, but later, it becoming a cryptic puzzle, is spot on. Many thanks for taking the time to do this video and pointing people in the general area. Too many vids are just about showing a fish coming up and someone saying "that's a beauty" with no related info. Again, many thanks.

Hi Thanks for the vid, great end to end info, shared in simple and interesting way😊 You have perked my interest to get some pots, Everyone talks about south side sandies, is there any decent spots on the north side of the bay?
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 7 күн бұрын
Awesome, thank you. It's been a LOT of years since I crabbed the north side of the bay. We did get a good feed of crabs dropping pots in Pumistone passage back in the early 90's. Used to stay at the Toorbul caravan park and drop the pots mostly south from the ramp if I remember correctly. Also in Elimbah creek I think. Watch out for the green zone north of there. I know there are sandies out from the sandhills on Moreton Island. And I have seen pots dropped near Crab Island in Days Gutter. I have mentioned some crabbing spots in the Moreton Bay playlist. The only one I remember is about 3 1/2 minutes into this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8x8qcWSmLCpY6s.html Not sure if there are any others. My best tip is to keep an eye out for where others are crabbing reguarly and drop your somewhere in that area, not too close to theirs. The trick is to find the depth they are at and then put all your pots at a similar depth in that area. Hope you get a good feed.

I have been using size 6 or 8 hooks for mine, mainly catching herring on them for threadies in the brisbane river if my cast net spots draw a blank. Is there a reason you use 1/0 hooks? Just curious if I should make the change.
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 7 күн бұрын
No, the hooks on that rig are size 6. I usually use size 6, 8 or 10. 12 occasionally. I feel that 8 is a good all round compromise, but sometimes I can pick up rigs with the other sizes a lot cheaper.

I have been hooked a couple of times so I always want an even number of hooks on my sabiki so I can link them together, out of the way. Yes, it has been cracked for a little while. The stikaflex is holding it securely. I need to break the whole thing out to fix it, so I have put it off for the last couple of months.>ven if the nut does break I think the stikaflex will hold it.

I like to fish around south west rocks but I mainly get Snapper/Squire there and it is closed season for them until 16th August. Years ago I caught flathead and grassys around Hole In The Wall / Platapus but I haven't fished that end of the island recently. You can also get squid a bit to the east of the Platapus jetty. Shallow there so don't let your jig go too deep or you will lose it. I also occasionally fish around Hanlon light and in toward the Red buoy in the Lazerette, but again, you will get Snapper/Squire as well as Mackerel and a few other species. Have a look in the video from 14:50 to 16:16 and you will see the knot of lines where I was drifting off Wellington Point, a bit south of the ramp. Look around 7m to 8 m anywhere from the red off Empire Point up to Huybers Light. Standard squid jig with a #4 ball sinker on top. Good luck.

So frustrating when you get bitten off so much. I find it makes me second guess my equipment and line and I usually give up and go heavy but then you get fewer bites. On this occasion, you seem to be getting bitten off above the baits. This is of course more common when live baiting. No way around it I reckon. Lovely feed of crabs though! Thanks for the video, please keep them coming.I look forward to seeing them every week.

I was out there yesterday into the evening, having one last crack at the snapper before closure. Did quite well using orange 3.2inch bait junkies on a 1/4oz jighead on 8lb line. Sound around until you find a school, then spot lock about 10m down current. Cast the lure about 25m up-current, and let it work its way to the bottom. They'll usually hit it before it hits the bottom. If not, bounce the lure a few times before trying again. Seemed to catch pan to medium sized snapper while most boats around weren't getting anything. Chased some squid around the flats near SW rocks until the sun set, then anchored between the E cardinal and the Green after dark, and landed a few more snapper and a 1m jewie. Got snipped off by several tailor, and a couple of hammerhead's. Just kept a couple of snapper and released the rest. Most of what I've learnt about fishing around peel, has been from your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!

I was fishing West Peel from the afternoon into the night, got smoked so many times and bitten off by big tailor, one decent one right at the net.

Another great trip. I like the way you hook the sabiki hooks together and wrap them around the rod for storage. After losing my temper too many time I finally bought one of those internal sabiki rig rods. They are great but take and up space in the boat but I love it. Where is the new rod?
@weFishAU
@weFishAU Ай бұрын
Thank you. I only needed to get them snagged on something a couple of times to figure out a better way. I have got one of those hollow rods, I found that a lot of sabiki rigs were too long to store properly and due to the stiffness I didn't catch as much bait as I do with my Penn Battle II rod. I had both new rods out that day. I think the one I built was the one that caught the snapper. Silver overhead on that one.
