Great review, all of your videos are, I have the 24-120 and I don't think it's worth me changing, I like the extra range and if I want to go arty I put on a prime.

Is the Nikon 600mm F5.6 ED IF in the same category as the 400mm F3.5 as far as image quality. I am considering buying one in mint condition with all the filter inserts at a decent price.

About fresnel lenses, I have tested them on a D850 and they perform exceptionally well. The freznel ridges are too small to affect image "resolution" and the only hint they're being used is through bokeh which has a very slightly frizzy inner structure - easily corrected out. In fact, most manufacturers will turn to freznnel in the future as nano scale resin lithography becomes a more efficient (and potentially cheaper) way to bend light without colour aberrations. Those who don't will simply be left behind.

I'm an absolute noobie and all I wanted to know was how far can i zoom with the big lens. This answered my questions, including quality of the image so tyvm and good job.

For the money this would be,extremely hard to beat often out performing much more expensive lenses. I have one I use on my Nikon D7000 which rarely comes off, absolutely brilliant images. Doug Kelly New Zealand

I purchased this lens with my first camera ever (the wonderful D810) about 3 years ago. It’s been with me as I learned and it’s gotten me through everything from documentary style photo journalistic assignments to portraits and even some second shooting on sports. The only 2 downsides from my perspective are the fact that it isn’t a faster aperture (not that I can expect any more from such a wide zoom range) and the vignetting (tho even that is not so bad nor common enough to make it a deal breaker) this is a fantastic lens and I have zero regrets about purchasing it

The AF-S version of the 60mm micro is great for those looking to use the automatic focus stacking feature of the D850.

I had to buy this as a back up lens, because of the brittle and cheap plastic of my 24-70 2.8 which is only giving me headaches lately. I think I'll keep it anyways.

Very valid advice. I resisted the temptation to upgrade to FX seeing that the D7000 suited all my needs, I did however upgrade to the D7100 as the higher number of megapixels allowed me to get away with more severe cropping when used for wildlife shots.

Nice summary, thanks. Personal favourites are all AFD lenses, the 80-200 f2.8, though heavy, is the closest i have come to prime lens sharpness on a zoom. And for macro results, the 105 f2.8. Absolutely spectacular. The 50mm F1.4 AFd doesn't disappoint though not at it's best wide open. Like the 28mm F2.8 AFd. I sold this lens and i am now regretting that decision.

Manual focus is actually an advantage in some type of photography. Especially in object documentation such as professional architectural documentation.

I have the 200-500 f5.6 new boxed but am keeping the 200-400 its been with me to long to sell . I expected the 500 to match the £4000 + lens , although its sharp the pro lens just pips it , so the 2-500 has been stuck in its box from day 2 .

It’s funny because I just got done watching a portrait photographer who took a look at every single lens he used to see, which is the most used lens in his photography, and it happened to be the canon equivalent of this focal length zoom lens.

What a great, critically constructed and thorough discussion of these lenses! All other 'reviews' ive found on this lense are just gushy without any detailed discussion. This has really helped me think twice about whether i would want/need/use this lense vs alternative options, especially where budget is a huge factor. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I don't know the availability of the Nikkor AFD 28-105 3.5 now as I purchased mine years ago and even then it was a nice budget price, I've never regretted buying this lens as it gives me outstanding images, that even much more expensive lenses are capable of. It's macro is a big part of it's feature too. If anyone has the opportunity to come across one for sale, then grab it. I guarantee you will absolutely love it. Mine stays on my camera 90% of the time.

Excellent review on the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. You really broke down the pros and cons of this lens. Honorable mention in your conclusion on the 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 zoom. I just recently purchased this zoom for my Nikon D3500 in excellent used condition and it can hold its own against the 24-70mm f2.8 at a substantially lower price.

I got mine as a kit lens when I bought my D750. I love this lens, because it’s so versatile. Its the best travel lens because if the 24mm wide angle and the 120mm zoom is a good Combination for most conditions. It’s a bit heavy, but nothing that I can’t handle. It’s just a great lens.

Not sure if anyone will respond, but if you or anyone else reading this who has this lens, do you know how it handles stars? What I specifically want to know is how bad (if any) the chromatic aberration is. Do bright stars appear to have violet halos?

I find manual focusing rather unpleasant, I don't know if my camera has a problem, but it seems that some "points" are harder than others when focusing manually... Perhaps because of the movement caused by the internal motor over time...

Agree 100%! I have this 180mm f/2.8 AF D Classic! And will NEVER part with it. It grabbed my attention when I viewed the very first photo I took with it! Note: I have the new Nikon ZF and with this lenses combo it’s pure magic when manually focusing! And the lens hood it’s my favourite hood ever made… it’s there when you need and you barely notice when you either using it or not using it… just the sliding back and forth it’s just the best hood design ever made by anyone!
