As a fan of Elden Ring, I really appreciate the work that the FromSoftware team has done. The sound in the game is truly captivating, though in some moments, there’s a noticeable repetition that slightly diminishes the experience. But I understand that this was necessary to conserve resources. I've seen many different redesigns for this game, and yours, in my opinion, is the best! It captures the spirit of the game perfectly and sounds really interesting. Adding a bit more ambience could enhance the experience, but overall, your redesign is impressive! Thank you so much for sharing your work and experience-it’s always inspiring to see such creative contributions.

Thanks for the video! S-Layer still seems the most transformative and creative though IMO. If you don't already have sounds that are processed or cut up properly, the other tools won't do you much good.

Hi David, I have just started learning game sound design and started working on a Call Of Duty Warfare gameplay clip. I am able to add the gun sounds, foleys and other game notification/warning sounds. But when I compare mine with the original clip, I find my sound design missing a lot of low end, like around from 300 to 50k. How do I fill up the low end?

Would you say it's better to reference the original when making a redesign? I actually DON'T reference the original so I can put my own take on it. For portfolio purposes, do you think it'd be wise to reference, or not?
@daviddumaisaudio7 күн бұрын
Not better or worse. Both are necessary. Referencing/trying to recreate the original AND creating your own take on a redesign. For a portfolio either could work. Doing your own version is probably the way to go.

@@daviddumaisaudio Reaper has a weirdthing with its encoder sometimes. I converted HDR footage from PS5 for a redesign and it messed up the colors, even after converting it to SDR. And it played properly in VLC so its a big odd. Still great vid and use of nvk create. Was considering either that or weaponiser. Still deciding.

Curious why the foundation of this was importing already made samples... I had expected "from scratch" to be designing the swing sounds themselves, then processing them further. Would you consider the sort of base sound design process (like making that collection of swing samples) a separate or less essential process than further processing or layering already made samples? I could see that being so, considering the abundance of fx samples already out there... But I could also see it being a hindrance not understanding how those were made, as that process could inform later stages of your sound design.

I break my work sessions into something like this: 1. Record & edit 2. Design 3. Assemble 4. Implement It’s not that one session is less or more important than the others, I just wouldn’t “design” recorded sounds in the same session as a redesign. I try to split them up like this to keep me focused and batch similar tasks together. 1. Recording and editing is to make the recorded sounds be as clean and useable as possible 2. Design is to experiment with processing, layering, fx, etc. and see what kind of results I can create 3. Assemble is to put ready sounds together in a design that makes sense 4. Implement is to place them in a game engine (which I don’t personally do much of) I think it’s really important to know how sounds get designed from recording to final sound but at the same time, when working on projects, you won’t always have the time to do that.

David, really small note of feedback for you (this is something I myself would appreciate knowing if I were you).. In headphones when I listen back to this redesign, I can hear something like your desk or mic stand shaking probably through your vocal mic, seemingly most noticeable when you hit stop via the spacebar. Barely audible on phone speakers but definitely made me go “what is that?” when on headphones. Other than that, love watching your work process. Thanks for this!

Hey, thanks for the feedback! That has been bothering me for so long and I am in the process of looking at getting a new mic, stand, and shock mount which will hopefully fix this issue.

The color grading of the samples is fun idea, though it might interfere with the current habits/using colors to preview frequency range. The fact that it's all free - hats off! Looking forward seeing more content and maybe another set of tools (even paid ones) made by you & tailored to Reaper and Game Audio, because I personally really like your style of workflow (despite not having some of the tools you use, like PhasePlant, Whoosh etc. - maybe once I'm able to get back to making a living in gamedev...). Anyway - fingers crossed for that 10k subs this year, David!

Hi! I enjoyed the video! Thanks to upload it! btw i have one question. Would it be okay to use the NT5 microphone in a room without any soundproofing or absorption? Won't the noise floor be too loud?
@daviddumaisaudio22 күн бұрын
depends. Noise floor usually refers to self noise from the electronics. The NT5 is pretty quiet at around 16db of self noise. The recorder will be the other device which will affect noise floor. In terms of room noise, reverberation, etc. it depends on the room you are recording in. If its in a small empty room with no carpets and nothing on walls, then reverb will seep into the recording. If you record in a closet filled with clothes and carpet on the ground, you probably wont have much other noise than what you are recording.
@user-zk5ud5db4l19 күн бұрын
@@daviddumaisaudio I was more concerned about white noise inside the room rather than self-noise from the electronic devices, but your answer was very helpful! Thank you so much for your kind response!

Depends what your goal is. Generally speaking, if you are applying to a gaming studio, they are not looking for a movie sound designer and vice versa. If you're a freelancer, then yea, you could have a reel with both.
