Jordan is so articulate, introspective and insightful in this interview. His career was mind, body, hard work and luck all coming together.

Thanks for this! Any chance there are outtakes from the first Jack/Cher encounter. That scene is priceless and I would love to see "behind the scenes" on it.

That team right there put basketball on the global stage. After that Olympic display of pure domination and elegance. Europeans, South Americans and Africans started to emulate a lot of what they saw. They focused on Team Play and fundamentals though because natural athletic ability like these that these guys possesed was rare. All these years later the gap between USA basketball and the rest of the world has definitely been narrowed. In fact, one could argue that the 3 of theTop 5 players in the league are not Americans (Doncic, Jokic, Antetukompo).

No mention yet here of Rob Williams, who was the leading scorer on that Houston team and SWC player of the year in 1981. If he hadn't suddenly gone cold from the field against UNC after scoring 25 in the regional finals against BC, Houston would have won. If he had come back for his senior year in 1982-3, Houston might have been unbeatable. A lot of what-ifs. His pro career never took off in large part due to injuries.

The weapon that this team was cannot be understated. Two All-NBA players in Pippen and Jordan and three on the all-defensive team in Pippen, Jordan and Rodman. The sixth man of the year and just strong bit players who helped in their own way. It was a team that was fun to watch on both ends of the floor for all 48 minutes.

I don’t think many people notice this about Michael, but he reveres Phil Jackson 8:00. He respects him as a leader, and if MJ will let Phil guide him with his vision, then everyone else will, too. Jordan wanted to be coached. I believe that’s because he grew up with a great dad and had healthy competition with his brother. Not to mention his coaching in North Carolina. No shade to Lebron, but he didn’t have a father figure, and in psychological development, that would impair him in knowing his role. Michael Jordan understood his scope of work. Lebron wears too many hats. He is a fantastic player, but what made people love Mike is his vulnerability regarding his limitations. He didn’t feel a need to do everything. He knew his limitations and also knew he had none in terms of his play. A great player who is still willing to be coached takes having significant control over your ego, which allows you to be present. His Airness was always present. It’s what helped him transcend the game.

I can imagine if this was him doing this to the bulls if MJ came back and pippen was in the bulls still. If pippen was struggling with Kobe Bryant when he was with the Rockets I can see this scary situation doing this to the bulls if MJ and pippen was with the bulls in 1999.
