heres a question I have. When it comes to tags on steam is there a potential to oversaturate your games recommendations by applying too many tags? Even if those tags are relevent and would reccomend game within the same category?

This an absolutely awesome lesson and I love the full analogy you have here. Also I laughed at "poo particles" way more than I should've. So thank you for that 😆

12:46 Just want to point out that the cost of computation WAS going down fast, but there were, in fact, MANY signs of slowing down. Moore's law is the best example. We are pretty much hitting the transistor size cap already and won't have much faster hardware in at least like 20 years when quantum computing starts actually working (maybe!!!!!!)

Beautiful abstraction! This isn't just about game development! For example, if you are a painter, you have to throw away drawings, so the items you do keep gain in value. When you throw away everything, you stand still. If you don't throw away anything, you are just collecting garbage.

This is great for... making games as a business model where you are weighing daily costs vs potential return and profit and want to get to release date quickly and efficiently and you mostly have no idea and no strong opinions about what the game is that you want to make. Or I guess this is a good strategy for a game jam too. However, this is mostly irrelevant to an entirely different type of game dev scenario, the passion project. This video completely ignores the style of game made by someone passionate, who has a complete or near complete vision of a game that they themselves would love to play and have sunk years thinking and developing concept of the game. Sure, if your goal is to make a bunch of games that have mediocre success and let you pay the bills, then fair enough, but many major breakout successful indie game with longevity is usually a passion project that did basically none of what you discuss in this video. Cave Story, Star Dew Valley, Shovel Knight, Jump King, Braid, Undertale, Celeste, Baba is You, Dead Cells, etc... they knew what they were going to be when they were started. They didn't set out to put a "boat on a infinite ocean" and let pseudo random data collection on perceived "fun" steer the direction of development. They knew what they wanted to make, trusted themselves and their judgment, put their heads down, made something they loved and were rewarded for it. There is no guarantee that this type of game is going to be successful, but players love genuine experiences which is why, when it works, it really works and the games go viral.

Anyone who wants to develop like that can do it. "Just follow your passion" doesn't need a video like that. Everyone who wants to improve his odds of financial success does.

There's some really good ideas here but this whole concept is flawed in a bunch of ways. If appeal is presentation x fantasy x readability then why where Flappy Bird and Wordle so popular. Why was Farmville a game that was horribly ugly with a terrible interface and core fantasy so popular? Why is Windows Solitaire and Tetris some of the most played videogames of all time? Your model seems to be fundamentally missing parts for it to make sense that you are just ignoring by ONLY pointing an examples where it makes sense and ignoring anything that doesn't fit. Why is so little attention paid to leveraging the resources you -have- to reduce the difficulty of the search. The fastest way to reduce cost and improve your 'search' is to leverage the resources you have and not chase competing products. This overlooks the flaw in prototyping that unique design spaces can't all be access with a prototype, and that near misses with a prototype can make you write off a concept that would have been successful (you obviously don't know that, you write the prototype off as a 'failure' and then stop searching). If you are always looking for the low hanging fruit design wise you are constantly competing against lots of similar products in an over saturated marketplace. You use the analogy of a search algorithm but ignore using a binary search, where you would go out to a fixed point and then check the depth half way between your starting point and destination, I guess because it doesn't fit with your metaphor nicely enough ;) Developing gameplay and art separately only makes sense in specific contexts. If your game depends on a specific metaphor like Hearthstone as a physical card game; or Ico's ability to hold hands with an NPC you are escorting you need to prove out that you can translate the metaphor in both art AND gameplay together because if you discover you can't bring those two things together too late into development it's going to waste a lot of effort. Revenue isn't a good proxy for quality. I double dog dare you to do ANY amount of financial analysis of top 100 open critic or steam scoring indie titles against the income of lazy F2P fomo generators. I guarantee that Coin Master takes more in a day than a 90+ rated indie game on Open Critic. Indie devs need better KPI's to measure against than 'will it sell' whilst still accommodating 'will it sell well enough for me to make another game'.
