Hi! I just watched one of your older videos on your other channel on halter training a cow. I didn’t see an option to comment there. I have a 5yo jersey I’m milking and she’s sassy. Lately she doesn’t want to leave the barn after milking, or will stop and go a different direction when I walk her back to her paddock (we rotationally graze). Usually a little tug on her collar will get her going or I will even clip a lead rope on or slip a halter on her. Today she wasn’t having it and pulled and dragged me all over the place. I even ended up with a couple of bruises. I understand, it was my mistake… she isn’t properly halter trained, so I shouldn’t try to “lead” her like that. She came to me from a dairy a little over a year ago. What would you do in my situation? I need her to respect me. She can be difficult in the stanchion too, dancing a lot and putting her feet where it makes it hard to milk. I try to correct her, but that girl is stubborn!

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I would work with her just like the cow in my halter breaking video to train her to lead. As you have discovered, an unbroken cow is a safety hazard and generally not enjoyable to handle. Alternatively you could try driving her from behind (walking behind her, probably with a stick as a visual aid) to herd her where she needs to go. The obvious problem with this is that you have no stopping power if she decides to take off ahead of you. If she was my cow, I would get a good, sturdy rope halter with a thin noseband and invest some time in teaching her to respect it. As regards dancing in the stanchion: you could tie one leg back if you have a post to tie it to, but otherwise you're going to need to just firmly correct her every time she dances around or kicks. (And a good smack is a pretty effective form of correction. Don't be afraid that you're being cruel by smacking her. Trust me, it will hurt your hand more than her hide!) Hope this helps!

That was a crazy, long, frustrating drive, and I wasn't even there with you guys! Fuel filters get neglected way too often, wish I could have suggested it when you started losing power. Anyway, glad you made it safely! I bet (hope) that ferry ride was a welcome relaxing time. I'm a new subscriber, and will be moving to Alaska in 2024, though my journey will take me through Canada. I'm glad you didn't run into any issues with your wireless hole puncher. God Bless. -Dusty

Hope all goes well with your move!

Is there a tool that will peel off the bark?
@lastfrontieradventures4292
@lastfrontieradventures4292 Жыл бұрын
I always do it by hand, but there are tools designed to remove bark from logs. I think a drawknife would work, but I've never used one, so I'm not sure.

More mouths to feed and water! They are very cute, they look like they'll grow up to be healthy and strong. I hope you have your well running, driving to haul water in those jugs is time-consuming and a lot of work! Did you ever post the last leg of your trip where you took the ferry? Wishing the best for all of you...

Thank you! The well is almost running. We had it working for one evening, then discovered that the jet pump was cracked. (The crack only became visible when the pump was turned on and under strain from pumping water.) So we had to buy a new pump, and now we just need to install it. Last legs of the trip are in the works. As you can tell, I'm not the quickest video editor, even though my editing is so minor. I hope to have it up soon.

LOL, at 14:18 "The question is can I remind you that I'm a good mechanic when I want to buy more tools." Tools are mandatory so they're always a justified expense. That's what I tell my wife, "I'm only buying the essentials.". But it's amazing how many things seem to be essential... Alayna is right, you are all blessed that you're a good mechanic. And smart enough to have had that fuel filter with you! Glad to see those new, heavy duty tires have been holding up. Your first leg with the tire problems was crazy.

I'm envious of you having birch bark, what a great fire starter! Here in Ocala, Florida we don't have any birch, as you know. And that wood stove is an excellent stove. It looks like a Vermont Castings wood stove. My friend has one at his home in Arkansas, a great and efficient wood burner. Stay warm!
