Hey Danger Cat, Hungerford here. While Rivenstone is certainly easy to learn, there's a lot to master in its tactics. Specifically, the three-pronged approach to how you try to achieve victory. Since players can earn victory points via scenario, via killing enemy heroes, and by completing specific actions with their own heroes, you have a wealth of options turn to turn on which strategy to employ to win the game. Speaking of options, choosing which models to activate and which to return to play via your barracks adds another layer, as the exhaustion economy is one you have to manage very carefully along with your vigor and shard resources. After dozens (or in the case of our game design team ... hundreds) or games, we've found no lack of replay value or new tactics to try. The open nature of list building allows for experimentation, and given how important each individual hero is to achieving victory, changing a single model can provide a fully new experience on the tabletop. In regards to table size, given the range measurements and overall tempo of the game, 3x3 was specifically chosen for a few reasons. Most important of all is that the design team wanted to craft a game in which almost every part of the table is in play at all times, and on many scenarios in Rivenstone that is certainly true. Our community has created a TTS mod for people to try out games of Rivenstone prior to its release next year (the fine folks of the Barracks Action podcast, to be specific). If you want to try your hand a few games early with other players, they have a Discord channel where we're certain you can find someone to play with, and experience the depth of Rivenstone yourself.

While WH40K is certainly an involved game, there is no fun in playing that. The myriad of small rules and exceptions make heads hurt and games last an eternity. I for one like games like OnePageRules.

I have to agree. This game is also incredibly expensive... With Kickstarter supposed to be a cheaper option.

Why only limit yourself to one wargame? Many have gameplay that is vastly different, lots of strategy/tactics to explore with each.

I think this is meant to show general gameplay rather than an in-depth "Let's play". I would imagine we need to watch channels like GMG or PlayOnTabletop for that sort of thing (both of which would do an amazing job).

@@JanterCyrano I do not belive you need a gimmick like that to set your game apart from other games. I never released a game but to me what is important is a evocative setting and interactive actionpacked rules, I do not think being super original is that super important.

@@JanterCyrano I agree that it gives the game a different feel. Even if you kill a bunch of your enemies you can't sit on your laurels. On the flip side, even if your figs are coming back, you still need to get them in the action, and, chances are, that it's away from your gate. In shogi ("Japanese chess") figs can not only come back, they can come back ANYWHERE. I like this better as there's only one entry point, and that is a manageable threat.
