Hello! I have my grams 301 and have been learning all about it! Do you think I would be able to quilt (just starting to learn) without changing anything- tension or foot pressure? I was messing around with it and then realized I don't know enough about the machine to be messing around with the knobs!!!

Thank you for these videos. This is my first time working on a machine and your step by step method is wonderful. I have a question about removing the lever in the back that raises and lowers the presser foot. I don't see it in this video but it is already gone at the start of the next video about removing the tension. mechanism. I don't see a straight forward way to remove it. THanks!

Hello! You are very attentive! Yes, I removed it off camera, sometimes I take them out and sometimes I leave them. They are held in with a tapered pin that is pressed in. It can be punched out from the back. Sometimes. Sometimes they just won’t punch out and you can damage the pin. You need the right size punch for the hole in the back of the nose and you can try to tap it out with a hammer. When I reassemble that part I will at least film the reassembly and explain how it was removed. I just get very nervous showing people how to do something that could potentially go wrong and cause damage. I hope that helps!

Oh, my goodness. This blue is incredible. The Singer 301 is my absolute favorite sewing machine. I love everything I've read about it in my research on which vintage machine to choose. I love the industrial design and all of the wonderful features. My mother in law gave me her 1957 Featherweight. It's black and my 301 is mocha. Someday I'm going to paint both of them in a matching color. :o)

I love the Singer 301. I haven't done any sewing on mine yet, but I was wondering about the stitching you did on the cotton. The stitches look jagged, not neat and straight. I was expecting to see a very tidy straight line, but instead they come out to the sides and aren't aligned in a nice, straight line. Is this common with older sewing machines? The Singer 201 I've seen stitches wonderfully straight and perfect lines, just absolutely ramrod in alignment with each other.
@LovesGorillas

I'd like to clarify that I haven't sewn since high school and I'm in my fifties now. I've tested different machines over the years, but I don't have any sewing experience other than the Kenmore I had in the 1980s. I've seen stitching like your Singer 301's before, but I've also seen stitching where each individual stitch is perfectly straight and the super tidy stitching line they sew. I definitely lack your experience, but now that I've acquired my dream sewing machine (the Singer 301, $20 at a thrift shop), I'm trying to learn what I can in preparation for restoring it. It's in the mocha color. I'm thinking how much I'd enjoy a lovely mossy green for the paint someday.
@SewingMachineRehab

Hi! I had to go back and look at the video to see what you were pointing out about the stitches. I have two theories on what was going on. The first one is the fabric. It was a very inexpensive cotton and the weave was loose. I noticed that every time I would stitch on it, the stitches always looked awful, no matter what machine. When I would switch to a nicer cotton with a better weave the stitches would be perfect. So that is one reason why the stitches may have looked like that. The other reason is that the feed dogs may have been screwed down just the tiniest bit crooked. When you remove the feed dogs and then put them back there is just the smallest bit of play and they can actually screw down crooked which will feed the fabric crooked. This machine sold but I can assure you that if that was going on I would have find tuned it before it went to the buyer. I just can’t recall at this point since so many have crossed my bench. 🙃 Anyway, good eye, I wish I could tell you why it was doing that but I can’t remember for sure anymore! Your 301 that you found will turn out beautifully, good luck with your restoration! And I love the idea of moss green!

Hi Jen, Just to let you know youtube is including me in yet another trial of the layout that messes with the layout of comments etc. It may well see me leaving youtube once-and-for all as I'm sick of paying a youtube Premium subscription fee for them to treat me like this repeatedly. And youtube is unbearable with the ads. So if that happens rest assured it won't be because I don't love your channel. I really do and I've never seen a video of yours I wasn't eager to watch and glad I did. It's the same with Bob and Marie's channels. But some reason youtube is hellbent on pushing 'suggested videos' and making the comments difficult to find, read and interact with as they are including me in trials again and again - each with a different layout - but that achieves that end one way or another. The video and the comments from people in our community is what youtube is all about for me and if youtube wrecks that experience... I'll tell Marie and Bob about it too.

@SewingMachineRehab Күн бұрын
Hi! All I can recommend is penetrating oil and possibly heat to break it free. And a well fitting screwdriver of course. And patience! Do you think the feed dogs are coming up too high in the needle plate and hitting the needle plate? That can be adjusted without removing the feed dogs….
@trevaelwood-ii3vc
@trevaelwood-ii3vc Күн бұрын
The screw came loose after a few more minutes of waiting. Then found the hook is varnished in place. Thinking I’ll order the recommended penetrating oil. There was some gunk at that had accumulated around the edge of the needle plate too. Getting in there and doing a little cleaning and Lu big seemed to be a big help. Excited to clean the hook more thoroughly in the future though. You’re a guru and I appreciate your knowledge and time so much! Thank you!

Hi! My best suggestion is to take those parts off and clean them. Brush the threads on that long screw with a wire brush and clean out the threaded hole that the screw goes into. Then oil the screw before you reinstall it. That should make it easier to turn for you moving forward. I really hope that helps!

Hi! I haven’t ever heard that theory before, how interesting. I would say that it is no more dangerous than breaking a needle on any other type of machine. Best practice is to not push whatever machine you are sewing on past its capabilities. That’s when accidents happen. But as far as a 301 being less safe…I would say that is not the case! I hope that helps!

Hi! In this series we took care of the grease wick when we reassembled the motor which is why I left it out. If your motor has a little silver port on the bottom there should be a hole in that tube that you can pump a little grease into. Some of the motors didn’t have the ports, they removed them from the design later on. If you haven’t watched my 301 motor disassembly and reassembly videos, check them out. Even if you don’t take your motor apart they will help you understand how it works. I hope that helps! I should have at least pointed out the port in this video so thank you for pointing that out!

I just purchased a 1940 221 that looks like this one. After watching several videos where the paint has chipped on the hand wheel, I'm really glad for the chrome around mine (like this 1939 model). I'm going to be cleaning it up when my supplies come. My friend had it professionally cleaned years ago but I was shocked how much tan lubricant they put on the gears--it's a gunky mess! My main concern is a clicking noise when it sews, like something is hitting around the needle plate. I'll have to figure that out.
@SewingMachineRehab
@SewingMachineRehab 10 күн бұрын
Hi! Yes, the old grease you can find in these machines can be quite gunky! Usually there is way more grease than needed on the gears, a little really goes a long way! When you get to cleaning yours up, check the positioning finger of the bobbin case base under the needle plate. Sometimes the little springs on the underside of the plate need to be adjusted so there is less room for that finger in between them. You need just enough room for thread clearance but too much will create a clicking noise. Good luck with your restoration!
