I have used an acrylic varnish and linseed oil before, love them both but I'll need to try some different finishes for different styles at some point! Nice video!

Good job! I would recommend in the future painting the light colors first (except the dots). It's easier to cover light paint than dark. Also good song pick.

I first carved one of these when the video first came out, I've started to carve more recently. The first one came out looking ok, the second one looked like someone put it through a grinder.😂 Thank you for taking the time to show us beginners how to do this

Beavercraft is a low rated carving knife ..I was given some to review on my channel ....They are not bad for beginners ..but long term the steel probably wont hold up...Thank you my friend for sharing your knowledge and talent and keep those videos up....Thank you

I have that knife and with a little know how and some elbow grease you can turn it from a so-so knife into a very good knife. Use your coarse stone to grind that bevel off to a flat grind. That also thins the blade. Then work through your finer grit stones to finish, then polish and remove the micro bur on a strop. You''ll be amazed at how much better it glides through the wood. Like a different knife.

Whittling woods I paint mine to look like fly agaric red with white spots sometimes I carve a wood spirits in the stalk I always carry a swiss army knife with exellent saw on great to harvest branches for carving little tips 👍🐾🦊🇬🇧

Whittling woods also great for making pot puri scents spray favourite scent on it and enjoy or put candle wax on it to light barbecue or a bushcraft fire my wild foxes I hand feeds lives playing with the chips pounces on them if im carving he loves popcorn pounced on it if any pop out as for the badger he's pretty grumpy sulks if he gets only peanut butter sandwiches when I forget the jam combo 🦡🐾🦊👍🇬🇧

Whittling woods I would avoid fresh pine because you get sticky sap on hands and cloths and knife it's a bitch to remove too just a tip 👍🦊🐾🍀

Thanks I certainly had that in mind but so far it hasn't been to bad the few times I've tried it. These particular sticks were cut like 6 months ago. Not sure if that makes a big difference but I did have a small bit of sap on the knife lol. Appreciate the comment and tip! 👍👍

I took a Flexcut detail knife, which is fairly inexpensive, and I reprofiled the edge to make it a flat grind. Now it's as good as any knife I've ever used. Well worth the effort. It cuts sooo much better now.

@@whittlingwoods21 I started on a 400 grit wet stone to get the profile I wanted then went to 1000 to get a nice burr. Then 3000 and then 8000. Finished on a strop. WOW! I've carved with Helvies and this is just as good. Unbelieveably sharp and holds the edge very well.

Moral of the story: you don't have to spend a lot of money to have an excellent carving tool. An inexpensive knife (with a good blade) and a some work with the stones and strop and you're in business.

If I may add one more thing.....I found some carving gloves at Harbor Freight for $5.00 a pair. They are as good or better than anything (more expensive) that I have used in the past.

@@brinkleysfield How do you like the finish on the handle? I have a couple of OCC knives with unfinished black walnut handles. I oiled them to protect the wood, but I like the surface grip of them. The Flexcut handles look like they might get slippery if (when) my hands sweat. I really want to try the steel, though, so I might get one and just sand off the lacquer finish.

@@whittlingwoods21 swiss army knife is great resource especially if you modify small blade get one with the exellent saw on but no corkscrew thats a hot spot Philips driver on it is way better I modify old butchers knives too free exellent tool

When I see you cutting the wood, I see myself. I started whittling and I always wondered how Doug Linker makes it looking, like he is cutting soap not wood. I ordered basswood, I ordered flexcut knives, but it didnt change. Now I see, I am not the only one. And now I know, why lots of people precut their carvings with a bandsaw.

Several years ago my daughter asked me to carve her some Santa's out of wooden eggs. So I did 100 of them. This year she has asked for any kind of ornament that looks rustic for her "rustic tree". This will probably be at least a few of them. Great video keep them coming
