I am a fairly new amputee, 12/5/22, BK Everything has gone pretty well. I’ve had many interruptions in the process but I’m happy I did this! I have a life again. I am in a suspension socket, with 9mm gel liner. I start the day with just the liner and as my body heats up, I add a 1 weight sock. My question is regarding blisters … what can I do to avoid this?

To this post, I am not shy at all about my leg. The biggest cringe I get is so many in the community focus on, you have to be an extraordinary-extreme athlete etc. etc. I just want to be extraordinarily ordinary. (And I am). Those that start telling me all about how it is to be an amputee. They watch too much tv.

Piston action, get that, but you seemed to have bypassed the socket/fit. I have the pin BK - wall contact with the liner/limb is so important. Distal contact is minimal, I can not imagine bottoming out. I find this presentation confusing - from someone that has never donned a prosthetic. Do not wish to be snarky but…. Oh 14 years in, very active, accident at 60. However, I have begun to want switch to Vacuum system, due to soft tissue atrophy.

As a below the knee amputee, I'm very thankful to have had Beacon Dr's do my surgery. They are excellent in all that they do. They said they'd have me walking in 6 to 9 weeks. Well 4 weeks later I was up walking around and in 7 weeks I was back to pouring concrete 3 days a week. 14 weeks later, I was back 5 days a week pouring concrete and working 45+ hrs a week. Now I'm back in my work truck and driving to the job and setting and prepping the job for concrete. This past Friday we stamped a job and that was hard because you have to use you get obviously to stomp down on the mats to leave an imprint in the concrete. I was so tired after work that day.

The prosthetist is supposed to be able to lengthen or shorten a prosthetic leg. Why exactly not? You shouldn't have to go back to your doctor or insurance company. What's the reason why your prosthetist won't lengthen or shorten it for you? I'm an aka amputee for 55 years, never had problems until I came to the USA. I've seen three prosthetists and had two poorly made legs. Either they make it too long or too short by adding or removing spacers. I've never in all my 55 years heard of that before. Height is adjusted by shortening the pylon or fitting the correct legth pylon for an aka. I've had endless visits for alignment and they can't get it right. Now they want to make me a second new legblaming components. I've had better and worse components before and never fallen as much as I've fallen on this leg. I keep asking them to make the alignment etc right on the first new leg, before we even consider a second new leg because how do I know they can make the second new leg right if they can't fix alignment on the first few leg. Also they've made me lose functionality and say to me that they weren't there when I had functionality for 55 years so so they have to take my word for it. (honestly!). They also say to me that maybe I'm looking for perfection. (Honestly!) I'm merely looking for the same stability and functions I always had all my life. I've lost so much time and money in gas and no PTO every time I must return for something breaking hurting etc, and they can't relate to that. Now for the third time I been offered a refund by three companies, because they can't help me. Either the leg is too short or too long. And other issues. I can't keep trying out new companies and never get a leg that I'm used to.

42 years as a left bk. Difficult at first, but my physiotherapist had no time for self pity. I just retired after 31 years as a Manager for a crown corporation, married with 4 children who are my greatest pride, including my 3 grandkids. My wife has supported and pushed me over the years, and I love her deeply for this. Lately, looking back, I never really focused on just how big a change this was. Unfortunately I’ve had chronic intractable pain, but I’ve not let it stop me from having a satisfying life. Great video.

Try to find a good physiotherapist who specialises in amputees. Mine helps me physically and emotionally. Definitely start some exercises to strengthen your good leg and your residual limb. Is your prosthesis uncomfortable to wear? Go back to your prosthetist. Stay positive, you can do this.

totally agree, however. i offset the one leg balance by crossing my amputated leg arm across my body to compensate for the weight loss allowing me safer transfers with one leg. but i still want to walk again. I’m helped by having a stroke 20 years before the amputation so my right leg& hand and arm take all the support very strong after 20 years of compensating for a weak left side from the stroke plus i’ve further strengthened the meat leg with one legged minimal squats& learning the little micro adjustments needed by my good leg& foot to maintain balance. still use a better left arm crossover to compensate for weight loss of amputated left leg
