This is not a negative.... Herb knew there was another game. He knew what just happened meant nothing unless they won again. nobody celebrates the silver medal. herb knew what he wanted and needed. this was not a ragtag team it was a team being built.

What is there to say? Kurt Russell IS Herb Brooks. Herb Brooks sadly passed away, but did so as a Legend. Al Michaels commentator, "Do you believe in Miracles?", and those college kids who had SO MUCH WEIGHT ON THEIR SHOULDERS during that time (U.S. vs. Soviet Union in a very tense Cold War) and they DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT at the time. This is the single greatest moment in all of sports history in this country, hands down. I pray our country will unite once again like we were united then. God bless Herb, all of these hockey players, the whole staff, and everyone involved in giving America this Miracle On Ice. Thank you so much.

Stop with the praise of the Russian hockey team - Don't tell us about the Russians - they got beat many times - not just in the so called " miracle on ice" 1980 Winter Olympic game - The 1980 U.S. Men's hockey team were great players - that all had skills - Don't tell us it was a "miracle" - It was a team with skills - WE DID NOT NEED A "MIRACLE" TO WIN - Look back at history and see that Russians got ripped many times over the years - over the decades - and the media never ever seems to want to make mention of it all - The U.S.A. are under-rated in the world of hockey - - Russia got ripped a lot of times from Sweden- - Finland - the U.S.A. in the 1960 Winter Olympics Gold Medal game - - the 1972 Summit Series against the Canadien national team -

n 1980 Minnesota boys dominated college hockey. I consider the Olympic team as not only ‘team USA’ but also ‘team Minnesota’. Twelve of the 20 players were from Minnesota and the vast majority of goals were by Minnesotans. As with probably all Minnesotans my family, friends and I were glued to the TV on that remarkable day at Lake Placid. Great memories! I went to high school (Mayo high school in Rochester Minnesota) with Eric Strobel who is a year younger than I. As with many Minnesota kids at the time I learned to skate without any formal coaching and played in pick-up games on outdoor rinks. I recall many days we played when the temperature was below zero. We would play until are toes and fingers started to become numb and then went in the warming house (with a wood-burning stove) to warm up and then returned to the ice. There were two outdoor rinks at the high school and we played hockey during gym class. I recall that Strobel’s abilities amazed me even then he was able to hit a slapshot from one end of the rink into the goal on the opposite end without the puck ever touching ice on its way into the net. His contributions to the Olympic team were critical and yet not noted sufficiently by the media. He made very important defensive plays and passes in all of the games.

Mark, The main reason there were so many Minnesota kids was the fact about 7 players who turned pro early out of NCAA Hockey or players who opted Junior and turned pro early. Here is what would have been the 1980 USA Olympic Team had everyone played NCAA Hockey thru 1978-79. G - Steve Baker (Mass) Craig (Mass) D - Langway (Mass) Dunn (Mass) Morrow (Mich) Roberts (Mich) O'Callahan (Mass) Ramsey (Minn) C - Johnson (Wisc) Pavelich (Minn) Broten (Minn) Christian (Minn) W - Mullen (NY) Christoff (Minn) Gorence (Minn) McClanahan (Minn) Miller (Mass) Silk (Mass) Nilan (Mass) McDougal (Mich) So you have the State breakdown 8 Mass. 7 Minn 3 Mich 1 NY 1 WI This was the first group of USA players with elite talent at D and upfront. Langway on D and Mullen upfront had HOF NHL careers. Really began with the group of players born in 1955. 1955 - Mark Howe was arguably the best from that year in Canada, US, USSR, Czechoslovakia or Sweden. 1956 - Reed Larson, Tom Rowe 1957 - Rod Langway, Joe Mullen, Mark Johnson and Steve Baker (2nd goalie taken in '77 draft, first US Goalie since Brunei to win a PO Series) 1958 - Mark Pavelich 1959 - Broten, Christian 1960- Ramsey Minnesota had great forwards in that span, Reed Larson on D. Mass had the goalie position owned for US Hockey. D with Langway and O'Connell the best.

I'm in Minnesota. This was in the preposterous statement tournament. "This was a meaningless game." The greatest upset of all time, to this day; it can't be replaced in my lifetime. I'm not a hockey player but I know when a bunch college kids beat the Russian pros, I still thought there might be a venue for a replacement. but no, this is the "greatest upset of all time".

Hollywood Joe, The US Team was very talented. The fact they won with what was a A\B team of NCAA players makes it the biggest upset in sports history. The following players turned pro early G Baker D Langway (HOF) Dunn Roberts F Mullen Miller Nilan Gorence McDougal That's 9 out of 20 players not on the 1980 Team.

I started working at the Olympic Training Center in 1979 after I finished high school in Colorado Springs and I remember when the tryouts for the Olympic Team started and met many of the teams as well as several Gold medalist in the winter and summer games ! Olympic decathlon gold medalist Bob Matthias was one of the directors who worked for the Training Center and he would come to our shop every Friday with 2 cases of Miller Beer for the Maintenance Workers which I was one of and. Became really good friends with him !! I was also there when President Jimmy Carter boycotted the summer games and the woman's volleyball team lived As well as trained at the center And it was very hard for those. Ladies When they found out they trained for nothing. Pretty hard to see that disappointment in their hearts and eyes So I got to see a lot of ups and down Downs Back when I worked there

Props to the Russians for waiting for the US team to have their celly and then staying on the ice to shake hands with them. That Soviet team was unbelievably stacked. A lot of the younger guys later fought to play in the NHL after Glastnost and were very successful there.
