You know, I was pretty ignorant of the GR rock scene until maybe the late '90s. In the '80s, for me, it was WRIF and WLLZ outta Detroit. Lately though I have been digging into more West Side bands from the '80s and '90s. Any suggestions?

Hiya Dave! Great entry. Thank you for doing this. Iggy Pop is almost as Scandinavian as me! I did not know he also had Danish ancestry, but heard about the Swedish and of course, if a famous person is even a tiny bit Norwegian we will go on and on about it and try to guilt them to play here more 😂 His grandmother would have been born when Oslo was still called Kristiania, like my father (the city changed name 5 months after his birth!) Hope everything is or will be ok, again, great entry and thank you for the kind words! Cool record! I only have two Grand Funk CD’s and in part because my oldest brother was into them I got a battered copy of the live one on vinyl. A band I keep meaning to learn more about but it never seem to stick for some reason. Btw, and don’t be upset, your mispelling of my sirname is how the Danes mispell it all the time, making my names meaning changing from place of hill or stream to CRIME SCENE 😂😂😂 But don’t worry, GG renamed me after the Syrian dictator 😳😆 Best of luck 😊
@DavesBasementGrooves
@DavesBasementGrooves 13 күн бұрын
OMG! I am so sorry for the misspelling! I checked and double-checked, but still screwed it up lol. That's the kind of month I've been having, I guess. You're absolutely right, Iggy's grandmother's "official" place of birth is listed as Kristiania, but I figured most Americans wouldn't relate that to Oslo and then I did my typical maneuver and forgot to mention the original name. I guess it just proves my videos are unscripted haha! Cheers! I hope you're week is going well so far!

@@DavesBasementGrooves That’s ok, I’ve had to return ID cards in Dennark because they apparently are blind when it comes to my name in particular 😄 It’s kind of like, well imagine if Canadians said Sorry differently for no aparent reason! Boy am I in trouble now eh? 🍁 It was actually Oslo until 1624 when the Danish-Norwegian kong Christian moved the town after the 1623 fire and renamed it Christiania (We once had 3, Christiansand, Kristiansund and Christiania). Because Norway tried to move away from the Danish language after 1814 (booo!) the letter C going out of fascion, they changed it to Kristiania in 1877. After celebrating 1624 in 1924 they changed the name back to the old norse name, Oslo in 1925, so my dad would always say he was a Kristiania gutt (boy). No one even mentions 1624 this year… sigh. The part of town built over the old norse/medieval town was called Oslo, so they changed that to Gamlebyen. That unfortunately translates to «Old town» making lots of tourists confused and disappointed as there is, apart from some old cathedral ruins, mostly houses from 1870’s and to the present day. They wanted to change the city centre name from Sentum to Christiania but then the Ch vs K people and anti Danish anything people started arguing and now 15 years has passed and we still say Sentrum 😄

@@MortenAastad Hahaha yeah, the Canadians can dish it out just as good as anyone. My wife and I were over in Ontario a while back and a couple of locals asked us where our accent was from. We said "across the river" lol. That history of Oslo is fascinating! It seems odd that the 400th anniversary of 1624 isn't being talked about. Are there specific reasons for that, or is it just a matter of "moving on"? I would be thrilled to see what remains of medieval Oslo, but from what little I know there isn't much to see these days due to the fire you mentioned. Is that accurate?

@@DavesBasementGrooves I don’t know, current and future Norway cares less and less about history and so on. Also, the Danish times are constantly talked down or ignored unless people go on vacation to Denmark where they get offended that the Danes don’t know anything about Norway, our shared history and think Norwegians are Swedes. Also Norwegians can’t understand danes and allthough we share a language end up speaking English. I could cry blood. When they celebrated the forced break up of 1814 in 2014 a lot of news was about the Danes having «forgotten Norway» (they ignored Norway and censored news from Norway for over 20 years until the 1940’s, fearing our new constitution would give people any «good ideas» and having lost us to Sweden because of Napoleon was hard to swallow, then came the national trauma of losing 1/3 of the country to Preussia (Germany)). I don’t know if Oslo will celebrate 1925 next year. Might not be considered «PC» for the current population. Across the river 😄 He he. I was so close to go to Vancouver when I was in Seattle when I discovered that my visa wasn’t a re-entry! I was flying out of Seattle so that would have been a possible disaster! 😳

@@DavesBasementGrooves Yes, there are only remains of the two small cathedrals, a monestary that was allready a ruin (Danes made us protestant 90 years earlier) and the old kings… house). I was a little disappointed with Maladroit, but it stands to reason that with so many albums I'm bound to run into at least a couple that I could live without. As for the Pet Shop Boys, their '80s stuff remains timeless to my ears. There are other synthpop bands from that era that I still enjoy, but maybe just a handful of songs as opposed to full albums. Thanks for watching!

Love me some Pet Shop Boys. Is it really 39 years since I bought West End Girls?!? Great Tears for Fears as well 😊

Ugh. 39 years! Honestly, I love that song just as much - maybe even more - than I did when it first came out. Their music is so timeless. Cheers!

@@DavesBasementGrooves I remember that summer, I got West End Girl and 19 by Paul Hardcastle at the same time in Skagen. We had a stereo/recordshop, in fact we had two!

@@MortenAastad Ahh, Paul Hardcastle! It has been many years since I've heard 19. I don't own it... yet 😆
