What's the purpose of the gangways connecting to each other?

It took my brain quite a while to process that thumbnail image into something sensible.

can 380 units be coupled in passanger servoce without the gangways connected for whatever reason?

380’s and 385’s can not couple in service, unless in rescue. The 385 or whatever set is trailing will not be under power.

I don't know if they will work together, they might have the same coupling equipment but the electrical systems are probably a lot different. It is like how the 158s and 165s also have the same but are unable to work properly, though I believe the 170s can work with Sprinters so at least they are compatible (probably why Northern hasn't got any 165/166s).

its cool and all how they make it bend to the right position but why did the makers of this train think it was a great idea to make the gangway slanted instead of upright like a 158 or 156?

The class 380 and 385 have the exact same top speed, and the 380 is better in scottish conditions. The 385 suffers wheelslip pretty often

This is a lucky thing I saw so this 4 car 156 came in and it was like this🚋🚋 🚋🚋🚋🚋than it decoupled on the opposite side so like this 🚋🚋 🚋🚋 🚋🚋 than this train coupled to the other like this🚋🚋🚋🚋 🚋🚋 It’s like the middle train was cheating on the rear train to couple to the front (if you want a easer way to read)

Never going to happen. They are built by different manufactures and even though the physical couplings are the same (so that actually can couple in an emergency), the electrical connections are totally different, and even if they weren't the computers couldn't talk to each other (it's literally like one speaks German and one speaks Japanese). As said they can couple in an emergency, but that requires the electrical connection boxes to be pulled back out the way so they won't connect, with only the physical connection and air connection made, allowing a dead unit to be pushed or pulled clear of the line. Also the gangways are too different to allow them to be used whilst coupled. Even the 172s have that issue. They can work in multiple with sprinters since they have the same coupling and same electrical connections, but the gangways have to be locked since they aren't compatible.
