I have the 4000 and will never waste my money on another Cummins Onan gen. If you have ever taken one out of your rv you will find that these were engineered to be not user friendly. Cummins has done themselves a disservice by making junk like this. It’s like being in a bad marriage.

I'm very happy with the my Cub Cadet ( 4 Years old) the oil change access not so much. Added a 3/8" x 3 1/2" long pipe nipple and cap. Drains into my basket much easier. Other then that for my yard it's a good machine. Spend the extra $ to get the hydraulic shift. Makes reverse or forward movements very smooth

God bless you brother. From a 67 year old fleet mechanic that has been in the business beginning in 1977 .Sometimes you discover something like this and it can save a ton of heart acke and money. I am working on basically the same gen with this issue but had oil leaking and worn out belt ,tensioner cracked belt drive coupler ect .I scince youtube has so much valuable information research most repair jobs that I have not done numerous times for just such information that in so valuable. Thank you for this information as the intermittent cut offs was the straw that broke the camels back with the customer wanting a 1000 hour service done. I feel I would have had a comeback without this video..even if just because I filled it up to the perceived proper level.

@vegasdavetv I went ahead and did that exactly as you said. Now it runs longer, but it surges and stumbles quite a bit. However, it's on pavement in az, and it's 110 here, and the pavement is probably 160. Would it just be to freaking hot out no matter what?

Thank You Sir. May you be blessed for sharing. I have ONAN 4.0 KY-FA/26100H. (Specs call for 1.6 quarts 5w-40 oil. I drained all the oil. (not sure how much was in to begin with, looked full by dipstick)added exactly 1 quart of 15w-40(had on hand and fine for summer time) She started right up. I let if run for 10 mins then switched to circuit breaker on mode, then powered up new 13.5K btu AC with no soft start and she is still puttering perfectly along powering everything with a 2psi fuel pressure at the carb. I'm using an after market fuel pump and auxiliary tank from 20' aft. If that 1-quart wonder trick doesn't fix it for good she's getting her ass thrown out on the street and getting full time space replaced with her two Honda 2200 back up sisters.

The problem here is that Onan states in their manual for the 4KW gennies to screw the cap in and then check the oil level AND THIS IS WRONG! To properly check for oil level YOU DO NOT SCREW IT IN! If you don't beleive me, go ahead and fill to the level indicated in this video (just above the add mark) with the cap screwed in, and then check it again with the cap NOT screwed in. It will show the level at the full mark. Onan simply needs to change these instructions and tell everyone with one of these units in any and all ways possible that they did not provide the correct info in their manuals. Another falsehood here is that you need to wait any more than a half hour or so for the oil to drain from the head to the crankcase before checking oil level. Here's another way to prove that I am right about this: drain the oil after a 15 minute or so run period to heat the oil up, and fully drain it. Then add the reccomended amount of oil which I think is 1.6 quarts (The 2.8KW requires only a quart, and in the 2.8 manual DOES say to NOT screw in the cap to check level). Then check the oil level on the dipstick without screwing it in and you will see that it WILL be perfectly at the full mark. The fact that Onan has misrepresented this issue in this case in my opinion qualifies for a class action lawsuit!

Ok 2014 coachman freelander. Onan won't even crank unless I have the v10 engine running. Is there anything that prevents the Onan from firing if it knows the v10 is already running? Assuming since they run off the same tank. (Yes, I need to take better care of my coach battery under my steps.)

If it should still fire up, I suspect it needs a plug and maybe filter change as the rig turned 10 this year. Maybe I just do that anyway. It's been sluggish to start the last year or so.

OMG, IT WORKED!!! Since 2016 I've had this problem with my 5500 genset and could never find the fix. Siphoned out enough oil til it was down to the "ADD" mark and it started right up and runs like a champ... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS FIX!!! Still wondering though if the dipstick is the wrong length, or there should've been a baffle in front of the high oil sensor that the engineers never designed in the blueprints??? Or maybe the oil sensor is mounted too low in the engine... I had an Onan microlite 4000 in my last camper which was a 1998 model. It had the same dipstick and that ran like a champ with the oil at the full mark... Just didn't have as many sensors as the newer Gensets!
