Thanks, the video was really insightful but could you please explain why on an operator's perspective 3G has to be removed rather than use it as a hybrid network with 2G, 4G and 5G using compound antennas.
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficial2 күн бұрын
That’s because maintaining multiple technologies is not in the best interest of mobile operators in terms of efficiency. By phasing out the older technologies, they can utilise/re-farm the spectrum for newer technologies that offer much better value to customers. 2G and 3G networks are mainly good for voice calls which uses circuit switching and different radio access technologies which don’t use the network as efficiently as newer technologies do. So growing 4G and 5G and phasing out 2G and 3G makes business sense for operators. They just need to make sure they do it in the best way i.e. use those resources for newer networks with minimal disruption.

A small note about 2G and indoors coverage in the UK: Only Vodafone and O2 use low bands for 2G (900 MHz in their case). EE (well, Orange and T-Mobile before them) didn't have low bands and deployed 2G using band 3/1800 MHz, which also required them to create a more dense network. So their 4G and 5G coverage is often better because they use, among other bands, B20/800 MHz for 4G and n28/700 MHz for 5G.

Do you know why O2 and Tesco mobile calls are dropping out all the time and the signal is very poor
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficialАй бұрын
You will need to check that with them. O2 is yet to shut down their 3G network so the drop call etc could be due to general signal issues.

My carrier, Rogers, appears to use only TDD for 5G, but both for 4G. One thing you forgot to mention is with FDD the ratio of upstream and downstream bandwidth is fixed, but with TDD they're dynamically assigned.
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficialАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing that James. As for the dynamic allocation, I didn’t forget as that’s the key benefit. Check out the video at around 4:35.

I live in Canada, near Toronto. The company I'm with has partially shut down 3G. It's now only on the 850 MHz band and the 1.9 GHz band has been switched to 4G. I don't remember the last time I saw a 3G signal, but it has been years. I normally get 5G or 5G+ (3.5 GHz C band) and occasionally get 4G or 4G+. I suspect the problems people are having with the 3G shutdown is the carriers are not replacing it with 4G or 5G on the same or lower frequency bands. In Canada, the lowest frequency used prior to 4G was 850 MHz, but now 600 & 700 MHz are used. These bands can provide even better coverage than 3G. Also, when possible, people should consider using WiFi calling in poor coverage areas.

I miss 3G coverage a lot. I have changed ISP but suspect 4G will die as leaves appear on trees around me.
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficial2 ай бұрын
Yes, 3G was important because in some countries, 4G isn’t as wide spread as it should’ve been. Don’t worry about the leaves, 4G is leaf-proof:), but you’re right that any obstacle can reduce your signal strength.

I saw E for like a half hour then it went back to 4GLTE? I've never seen E before? Were they throttling me or something? Or is it a back up system or?
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficial2 ай бұрын
It's the way for your phone to access 2G (GSM) network for mobile internet when 4G LTE is not available for whatever reason. Reasons can be network busy or you being in an area without 4G coverage. Since 3G networks are no longer around in some parts of the world, E is the only option other than 4G or 5G for your phone to access mobile internet (when you don't have WiFi).
@michaelkulman70952 ай бұрын
@@CommsbriefLimitedOfficialThanks! I thought that was probably the answer but it's nice to be sure.
@michaelkulman70952 ай бұрын
Will a phone automatically use the best available network it can find and use by default or do you have to set it to do that yourself? I have 4GLTE now but is 5G possible if available? So far I've only ever seen E and 4GTE at top of my screen...
@CommsbriefLimitedOfficial2 ай бұрын
@@michaelkulman7095 The network makes sure that your phone is on the best available connection. The only exception to that is if you have a tariff that limits you to a certain network. For example when I go to Canada and use a prepaid SIM from one of the main operators, it limits me to 4G even though I have a 5G capable phone. If your phone supports 5G, if your service provider has 5G and if your tariff/subscription doesn't limit you, you should get 5G on your phone when it's available.

LTE nowadays can offer on average over 100 Mbps in most mature networks. WiFi can offer higher speeds if you have a decent fiber connection.WiFi speed is dependent on what the router is getting ( backhaul).

Embedded SIM which is a SIM that is built directly into your phone without you having to physically insert a plastic SIM. All you need is to program it using a QR code from your mobile operator. Most recent phones nowadays have eSIM built in as an extra SIM.
