After looking at the score and reading Verdi's notes for the first time, I could see how difficult this piece must be to sing. I have read that there are "first act Violettas," "second act Violettas," and "third act Violettas." Is it necessary to say that Callas was an "all three acts Violleta?" In this performance, when Callas was only 32, we hear a "Sempre Libera" that is heart stopping. One can only imagine how exciting this performance must have been live.

Callas encarna de tal forma a personagem a ponto de termos a sensação de ouvirmos a música pela primeira vez. Já ouvi diversas cantoras fazerem este papel mas Calkas é absoluta nele e em tudo o que cantou. Divina e insubstituível. A maior soorano de todos os tempos 😂.

The most exquisite, elegant , and superb refinement in Bel Canto, that´s why I adore CALLAS!!. Fortissimi intertwined with high pianissimi in a perfect musical line with absolute legato has no possible comparison with other performances! Performances of this caliber are out of this world!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Di Stefano ha sempre affermato che i tempi estremamente lenti della direzione live di Karajan ha rallentato la loro interpretazione ma l'accento ed il mordente sono intatti e le voci vengono esaltate in una registrazione UNICA e MEMORABILE.

Maria was impeccable in the high notes and just as precise in the low ones. This metallic sound that always accompanied her was somewhat annoying, but with age she managed to soften it. Callas is Callas. The biggest!

Maria Callas’ performance is utterly beyond belief. Especially on this aria, she set the opera singing bar so high that it cannot be seen much less attained ever.

Recognized as a talent early, it’s a shame every performance wasn’t filmed! Still, her stunning voice was captured and we can listen to her forever. Long live La Divina.

The 1955 Callas is the greatest performance of Violleta ever. Sempre libera is probably the highest point in the La Traviata . Fascinating.

E' veramente brutta questa 'D'amor sull'ali rosee'. Già Pannain tuonava nel 53 che non doveva nemmeno permettersi di cantare la Traviata, figuriamoci Trovatore o tutte le opere successive alla trilogia popolare di Verdi. Invece Pippo pur con una certa fatica nell'estremo acuto, che però è tenuto bene, fa sempre la sua bella figura. Lei non aveva senso del limite, nonavrebbe mai dovuto cantare Verdi e tantomeno Puccini, anche la Tosca: sembra una pazza.

Callas was inspired by Ponselle. Compare this Miserere to the exemplar of Ponselle and Martinelli. Sadly, Rosa Ponselle was a contemporary of Caruso, and therefore subject to the same limitations as Enrico Caruso faced of recording in that era, especially in terms of what could be placed on a single record.
