Spot on presentation! I remember as a kid going up to the “ Little professor” bookstore in Southern California in the 70’s&80’s. I loved drawing and bought his book. Probably from lawn mowing & car washing money.

I looked at several tutorials that demonstrated making contour cuts as if it needed to be a scientific study. You made it so much easier, getting to the main points to create a clean contour around a graphic. Thank you

Thanks. So, I have a very detailed piece of line art I drew that I'm vectorizing so I can sell digital downloads. Right now they are printing grey. I need my customers to be able to print them black. For coloring sheets. So, I was researching that I need rich black swatch, so do I have to click on every line/ stroke in my artwork to make it rich black or is there an easier way, and do I do this once I've vectorized the image. I appreciate your help.

Is there a way to set up the rich black swatch before I even pull the drawing into AI?

Great info, but I can’t see the name of each layer, what color is it. I had 6 spot colors, shouldn’t Acrobat have a title for each layer? Thanks Correction, I see it it’s an icon of 2 pages with a corner fold on one, on the right side bar. Good to know, it shows the type of Pantone color I had.

Thank you so much for sharing and explaining the process for converting to spot color! We just bought a new machine ( Ricoh) at the shop that I am working at and we are doing some training about this technique. Thanks again for explaining everything!

Thanks for the video. Some feedback. You having in the bottom right corner does not add any value;-) More sharpness of the screen shown would be helpful. Most professional studios that print your images do not require CMYK (at least not in Switzerland). More important would be to download the paper color profile of your selected printing studio, and adjust your foto according to that color profile

6:36 Regarding rich black, an important addendum often missed: rich black is only visible on coated paper (gloss/silk). Do not use rich black on uncoated paper. It simply increases ink saturation without adding any noticeable change visually.

I worked for Mr. Kuwayama back in 1988 at his Tokyo studio. I helped put together Trademarks Collection Europe edition 1. Huge thick book. I still have a dusty copy sitting on my bookshelf. Gosh it feels like a century ago.

I've been a fan of Patrick Nagel's work since the eighties while I attended the School of Visual Arts. At that time, I purchased (and still have) "Nagel: The Art of Patrick Nagel." I wondered about this often... so, Patrick Nagel traced the photographs in the pencilling stage? I'm not condemning; just asking. Thanks.

I honestly don't know. It's possible he started that way but his portraits are stylized in a way that makes me think he didn't directly trace.

Great tutorial for helping to understand Illustrator's highly complicated process. It's amazing that Adobe never figured out whatever methodology that Flexi allows one to do all of the same contour outlines and bleeds with a single touch of a button.

that was very good. one concept I am trying to understand. So I have the image in 300 DPI, and say its as big as 16x9 inch ... but i want to print on 8 x 4.5 ... will that work? logic says ... printing in smaller size should be less of an issue (compared to try to print the double the size of 32X 18) but from the video ... i was not clear what will happen? I will lose have the picture for cropping or no, it will just be compressed ? maybe that is printing setting and not image setting?

did you used pencil tool to outline and make path the ducky duck? or you used pen tool to trace the duck? Because I used pencil tool and my knife tool did not working properly every time I wanted to slice the path made by pencil tool.
