As a martial artist myself, I love every martial art. That being said in terms of practicality, I think that compact in short movements are more realistic than big wide movements.

Great post thanks! Would this be considered a “Mud Stepping”?
@flyingtortoisekungfu6020Ай бұрын
Absolutely, each family I've worked with has a different method for breaking down the foundations of Mud Stepping. However, at a proficient level Liang. Cheng and Wang style stepping all becomes pretty much the same thing.

It's an interesting version of the set for sure. Liu Mengeng was a wildly creative master. He was a scholar and combined his philosophical studies with his Bagua in some unique ways. As the 5th Generation Banner Holder under the LiuBin branch of the Cheng family it was his prerogative to do that. I haven't seem a Five Element version of the 8 Palms, Fists and Elbows anywhere else. My Shifu, Ni Rouhua is a 6th Generation Cheng. His version of the same form is vastly different. It consists of 6 sets. Palms, Fists, Elbows, Shang Pan (High Stance), Zhong Pan (Middle Stance) and Xia Pan (Low Stance). I don't have a great video of that form. Once of these days I'll film myself doing it and post it. I'm curious how your set differs.

@flyingtortoisekungfu6020 liubin lineage as well through Yang Guo Tai and my teach Josh Crossley. Our form circles, has some insert steps and more wrapping and twisting. My notes were lost in a move for all my baguazhang. Would have to hit up my teacher his martail brother to get the name list again

@@illiJomusic Very cool, I'll try to get my version of the form up in the next month or two, the kids are out for summer so time is a bit tight, I Look forward to talking more soon.

This proves what I have suspected, that bagua is useful as a healing practice. This will help me regain comfort and utility of my shoulders after surgery two years ago.
@flyingtortoisekungfu6020Ай бұрын
I had wonderful luck with this form as a therapeutic for my separated shoulder. My most favorite drill for shoulder rehab is this on kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h991pZyYnczYkXU.html its a bit intense so take your time working into it.

This master picks his feet up and sets them firmly down. I have seen (in videos) instructors shuffling in their stepping and it seemed wrong to me. As they stepped forward, the sole of their shoes would scrape on the ground so that you could hear it.
@flyingtortoisekungfu6020Ай бұрын
There are many methods of BaGua stepping and someone may have a good reason for dragging their feet. That said, I've never seen an experienced practitioner in Beijing of either the Cheng or Liang families drag their feet.

This video is extraordinary, I don't know if people realize how hard these movements are, and the level of mastery this teacher has, at this age. I am in pretty good shape, but I started doing this walk at home and the amount of tension it highlighted in my body, unbalances and tightness is humbling. I am definitely going to allocate time to practice this walk. This video is short but provides a ton of insights that other videos don't. Thanks!

No., the heel should touch and pivot. the stepping shoud be using the technique of earth step. Not walking with toes pointing around the circle. By doing that your feet are too close together when they pass each other rendering the stepping useless and the point of ba gua becomes moot. 8 steps around not many.
@flyingtortoisekungfu6020 Жыл бұрын
There are many forms of stepping in the Cheng BaGua system. That said, I have not encountered the type you are describing in either Cheng or Liang style, and none of the many teachers I have worked with in Beijing set a number of steps per circle, still I am glad that you have found success with it in your practice. All the best, Joey
