Impressive and exciting. And thank God the orchestra (*and* the sound engineers) knew well enough not not overwhelm him, like they do in many performances where the harpist hardly has a chance to be heard. Bravo to all.

What this harpist does with a harp is AMAZING!! Notice the musicians, mostly the males, dress down. No tuxedos or ties! Not that should make a difference. I should think casual dress is less restrictive.

Fantastic performance - love Ginastera's music and don't know of any other harp concertos that use the instrument so uniquely rhythmically and orchestrated so carefully to avoid drowning the harp. Sadly, I remember reading an article by a critic complaining some harp parts were inaudible in a big concert hall.

nice to see a guy harpist for once. it's obvious what that brings to the table in terms of approach and energy as opposed to many of his lady colleagues.
@AoAPC6 жыл бұрын
Well that's a ridiculously sexist and ignorant comment. There's a long tradition of women who have given unbelievable performances of this work.
@marsfuture6 жыл бұрын
Oh please, get off your 'ridiculous' and unwarranted moral high horse. Where in the world was I 'sexist'? I'm not doubting the many excellent renditions by female harpists. What I'm saying is that it's welcome to see a man passionately playing in instrument typically played by women. And that he plays differently than women usually would. The worst thing about you being sexist yourself, in fact, is that you'd probably applaud me had I written the same comment about a woman playing a usually male-dominated instrument and praising her unique style. Seriously man, get a grip of yourself and a reality check before you accuse people on here.

"it's obvious what he brings to the table ... energy as opposed to many of his lady colleagues." Emphasis on "as opposed to," implying that his "lady colleagues" do not deliver energetic performances. Your words speak for themselves.
@marsfuture6 жыл бұрын
You really should have the decency to quote me correctly, if you want to cast unwarranted blame and paint me with a really mean brush on here. I can promise you right now that this will come round to you one day when someone else will really bad-mouth you and tarnish your character. Be that as may, I did state my own opinion (I did not 'imply') that yes, a male harpist brings a very different approach (of playing) and energy to the table compared to MANY (not all) of his lady colleagues. And that's true just simply looking at the video; because this musician has his own style. You can be a feminazi as much as you want to be, but for me it's refreshing to see a charismatic guy on the harp for once as opposed to the many frocked, coiffured, long-haired graces stroking the strings I usually see. Because they're the majority. And I cherish seeing a woman in any area that men usually inhabit, from nuclear science, to maths, to playing percussion or whatever. So I say it again: get some humility before you start policing people you don't know on other platforms, making negative assumptions and misquoting them malignantly, with all your negative whatabouttery. It's a pathetic display, really - you should be embarrassed.

Because Finnish music belongs to the rest of the world as well, and it would be difficult always hire a finnish person to sing this, when it's performed all around the world, and because it's more interesting when saariaho's music is being construed worldwide and because the crowd isn't allways finnish, and because Saariaho has probably given her approval to this perfomance. Besides I did understand parts of it.
