Its kind of funny in and of itself that he could get Barney and Lily mixed up and it still works.

It’s weird because I’m pretty sure it was heavily implied that Ted was exaggerating a lot of his life but then when Barney shows up in How I Met Your Father he’s the same

How's ted unreliable narrator that man tells a story which lasts 9 seasons with precise details.

Himym using the unreliable narrator perfectly here. They took a relatively simple story and made it hilarious by having the narrator confused

I love those rare moments of Ted being an unreliable narrator, or just forgetting details of the story. It really brings up the fact that these are memories of his younger life, and they can get a little hazy some times. Kinda wish they did it more often. Still, the show still has brilliant alternative ways of telling these stories.

Most of the show's humor stemmed from Future Ted being an unreliable narrator.

Honestly, without Bob Saget narrating, this show would probably be half as funny as it was. Rip Bob Saget 1956-2022.

Lily saying that you should never call a woman fat to her face, reminds me of bundy's insult with responding, I'd say it behind your back but my car only has half a tank.

I really hate the unreliable narrator thing for the sole reason that people always use it to blame Ted for this and that. I think that what we saw is what really happened, except for the censorship (e.g. eating sandwiches) and occasional mishap (e.g. this video). That's what unreliable narrator is supposed to mean, unintentional flaws in the story because it happened a long time ago and it's coming from one person's perspective. And I'm sure that Ted had matured quite a lot from the Pilot (2005) to him telling the story (2030) to lie to his kids about getting back together with Robin. With that logic, then I guess Ted missed the opportunity of painting Barney as an abusive motherfucker towards Robin, and instead actually told his kids that Barney really did love Robin and it was unfortunate that it didn't work out. I guess it's also the fault of the writers for not clearly showing that Ted not only loved Tracy, but was actually happy with her and was destroyed by her death, that his kids actually did want him to get back with Robin even if he was hesitant to.

This is kinda proof that Ted Mosby definitely unreliable which helps the theory that Barney is actually a far less terrible person than people think and it’s Ted either deliberately or unintentionally making him out to be a bad guy so it justifies his terrible behaviour and treatment of Barney
