This is better than it has any right to be. I fell in love with Yes in the early 70’, saw them many times from the Tales tour on into the 90’s. I’ve enjoyed Jon’s solo albums as well as his Vangelis projects. I haven’t however enjoyed the Yes tribute band. Personally I think this beats out Shine in structure and capturing a bit of the old Yes. I’m still digesting these, but haven’t looked forward to an album like this for some time.

@TheAlbumReviewGuy I don't begrudge Steve Howe, he's an elite guitarist/songwriter for sure. Problem is,without that voice, it's not Yes. What came first, Jon Anderson or the egg?

@artmccartan4911 Seems you could be true. I admire what Steve and the band are doing but it’s not proper Yes, and whilst Jon does not set out to become the band as such , his voice has the upper hand. So many problems over the years. It’s such a conundrum. All the best. Dave✅✅

Another great review from my favorite band. If you do some digging into this track, there are several places it refers to their influences. Both in lyrics and in composition. Nightmare cinema for instance refers to something Dream Theater did during several concerts they held. Each member would change instruments and perform one of their tracks. For instance John Petrucci would be on drums and Mike Portnoy would play something else. See you on the next review. Cheers

The first minutes are all Jordan, he uses a Continuum fingerboard and lap steel guitar in addition to his keyboard to create all those astral sounds that are so reminiscent of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. You're right about the references to other bands and songs, there's an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to breaking it all down: basically they're paying homage to their influences and explaining their process of how they wanted to be different and stand out only to understand, over time, that there's no need to shed or break with those influences - but rather, the key lies in acceptance of who you are and what made you what you are now, to the point that you are now the influencer and inspirer of many other bands. It all comes full circle, and that's the concept they're trying to convey. There are lots and lots of "Easter eggs" here, in addition to the tribute to their influences (including specific prog influences like Pink Foyd, Yes, Genesis, etc.) and tastes not only in music but also in cinema and pop culture (including the movie "Awakenings" with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, with the whole "medicate me" section, or Owen Wilson, etc.), they also provide a master class on tying things together, in this case around the octave and/or the number eight. Octavarium is the eighth song on their eighth studio album, each song of which is played in a different key to complete the full octave. The section of the song that starts with "Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath" refers, one by one, to the songs that precede Octavarium on the album, starting with "The Root of All Evil" and ending with "Sacrificed Sons". If you listen closely to the section, you'll hear Portnoy shouting out "First", "Second", etc. before each stanza that describes each individual song. Like I said, therte's a Wikipedia page dedicated to the song where you'll find lots more of these Easter eggs and semi-hidden references. Truly a master class in composition, in any genre.

You should react to Fountain of Lamneth from the Caress of Steel album, or perhaps The Necromancer. The Fountain of Lamneth is just an incredible journey of a song, it is a shame they never played it live (legend/rumor says they played a handful of times but it was never recorded live). I thought I read an interview somewhere that asked about this song, I think one of the band members thought the song was too ambitious and pretentious.
