The whole point of that duel was to show Yugi could stand on his own so, by this point, he should still be reliant somewhat on Atem.

If this happened, it would help yugi shine much more, people forget that yugi, not atem, is the real main character of the series, atem mainly came put to duel for him because he was the king of games, but in the manga, what was really missed out in the anime, had moments to shine as a real gamer, like when yugi played DDM against Duke, yugi didn't have atem by his side to play against him because against Duke, the winner was going to get the millenium puzzle as a prize to be the real king of games, spoiler alert, yugi beat Duke in the manga by himself, showing that yugi while always taking the backseat in games, actually learned how to play like atem, and win

I Like this for the most part, though I'd make a few changes. Instead, Kaiba defeats Air Fortress Ziggurat with Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Alister loses his soul. Joey Then Duels Valon and wins, though the toll he took during said duel causes him to be dizzy duelling Rex Raptor and Rex easily wins with all 3 layers of the seal. Yugi and Kaiba then duel Rafael 2 on 1 and Rafael defeats Kaiba, though loses to Yugi. Yugi and Téa then duel Dartz, with Yugi forcing a tie with Dartz and Téa at the cost of losing the duel himself. The Great Leviathan then comes and seems unstoppable, though Yami Bakura comes out of the blue and defeats the serpent. Earlier on prior to this, Rebecca, Odion, who instead works as Grandpa's assistant and has 0 relation to Marik loses a duel, as does Rebecca and Yugi's grandpas and their souls to The Great Leviathan. Of course, they're all free once Yami Bakura destroys The Great Leviathan.

I do agree that the Pharaoh's soul should have been taken to give Yugi an arc to really prove himself as i can't really think of one time he actually dueled a serious duel in the series except for his duel against Atem himself in the series finale and his duel against Aigami in Dark Side of Dimensions

Well, i would call a Fusion of REBD and any Light Dragon like BEWD "Purple Eyes Chaos Dragon" then give it 4k Stats and a protection effect. And the Result of also throwing the Dark Magician in there i would call "Chaos Paladin", who has 5k Stats as well as both an offensive as well as a recursion Effect, in addition to keeping the protection from "Purple Eyes"

*Here's my problem with this:* If Raphael wasn't able to sealed after the duel with Atem because of him overcoming his darkness, then why was Yugi sealed when he didn't have the darkness in his heart to begin with?

Your opponents set cards cannot be activated in response to this card’s summon. cannot be destroyed in battle by a monster with equal or greater ATK. As for the fusion of it & Dark Magician: Celestial Trinity Dragoon Level 12, LIGHT, ATK 4500/DEF 4000 Spellcaster/Fusion/Effect Dark Magician + 1 Dragon-type fusion monster or 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK Dragon-type monster Must be fusion summoned with the above materials and cannot be summoned by other ways. It is an intriguing change, but I think the reasons you mentioned for why Atem had to be alone worked better for the story in the anime are what keeps this from being a full missed opportunity. In terms of giving Yugi more screen time and balance, I think there were ways the anime could spread it out in some of the other anime original story arcs or kept Yugi as the one who plays and defeats Otogi on his own. I think more of a missed opportunity is having Raphel beat Mai off-screen and stealing her soul. It would have been stronger if Mai joined back up with the group and worked to atone for her actions by helping them stop Doma. I'm not saying she needed to be the one to defeat Raphel, but we could have had Mai join in the duel against Dartz alongside Atem and Kaiba and been the one to play Jonouchi's Legendary Dragon and free Jonouchi and Valon from the Mirror Knights.

I think you have a point for sides story, but what matters is the reason. For why Yugi and Atem are overrated IMO. I think Atem has too much focus compared to Yugi, if it was balanced out more like, I would have liked them more overall.

Me and a friend of mine have a good idea you could probably try out what if Mai was in Yugioh R as we would get an interesting story with Mai being involved and her getting her own Evil God from Yako while being free from the Damage Marik's Game of Darkness and Penalty Game did to her in Battle City..

Or, and hear me out, having Mai be the third "knight" in his place after she takes Hermos from him. I think Kaiba, Atem, Mai vs Dartz would've been interesting to see since at that point they all have something extremely personal to fight for

Nah, it would not work in my eyes. The whole point of Yugi's last two duels was that he was ready to move on from the adventure and live as his own person. If he just kinda beat Dartz to save the world, that would have been a foregone conclusion and done what people accuse the released version of doing: devaluing Season 5. However, there is an alternate universe where they could have given Yugi some quality content and they just did not take the opportunity: Reshef of destruction. That videogame follows your self insert and Yugi is part of the most useless JRPG party ever because he only duels in cutscene-contexts.

I missed your Yugioh What If's! Even if its less of a What If and more of a narrative critique. I liked Atem's character arc in this arc, it showed how far Atem had come from the "malicious spirit of the puzzle", killing his opponents in Season 0, to being willing to stop doing shadow/penalty games in Season 1, to finally becoming the man he was before he lost his memories, someone kindhearted, yet stern and fair in Season 2 and Awakening the Dragons. That being said, I also like Yugi getting to show his confidence and prove he's just as good of a duelist as Atem, so I would'nt have minded if The Pharoah had his soul taken and Yugi got time to shine.

I mean with we did see this: In Zexal when Astral was "killed" by 96 and so Yuma had to do things alone for a while. BUT I do agree Yugi needed his own arc and sure- we did see it in the last arc but Yugi needed this moment to show the kind of duelist he stands and the whole "successor of the Pharaoh" thing. I would have appreciated it.

Yugi’s infinite loop against Strings is my favorite move in the entire series. It exemplifies the concept of using all the cards on the board to your advantage and turn your opponent’s cards against them.

My theory on why there were so many misplays in yugioh anime duels was probably because they were in such a rush on time limits to finish on a certain deadline

They've revamped so many of Yugi's cards to make their own archetypes (black luster, Gaia/Curse of Dragon, Dark magician, exodia, chimera, etc) I'm amazed there hasn't been an archetype for that mammoth graveyard play. I would love it

Duelist Kingdom arc was just Dungeons and Dragons but with cards. You could do pretty much anything but it had to be a justifiable action. Players were just making everything up along the way.

Two more honorable mentions from later seasons: In his duel against Rare Hunter yugi used summoned skulls electricity attack to charge his alpha magnet warrior with 2500 atk. In his duel against Dartz yugi defeated divine serpent (which had infinite atk) by placing two of his legendary knights on the serpent's head and made them attack each other to create an infinit loop of power only to make the third knight deal the fatal blow.

here's a scenario we never considered what if the card he had was Chaos Emperor Dragon Envoy of the End and with the play Bakura would do which would render Kaiba without his Blue-Eyes he then draws Soul Absorption plays it then by banishing Lord of D or Vorse Raider and one of the Blue-Eyes he can then summon it then he could go with either an attack from said dragon or uses its effect ending the duel in his favor

Incredible research 👏 Im on neither side so this is my answer: At time of this duel I think both of them were already true duellists but Joey still had more room to grow. So with that in mind I dont think Joey defeated Atem but Atem gave him Red-Eyes back which Joey didn’t refuse. Now this didn’t mean he would use it immediately and I assume Joey gave himself enough time to grow until he had the confidence to use the card again. But it could’ve also been a lot simpler and Joey accepted the card regardless of the outcome of the duel and would use it straight away because his journey as a duellist (this duel included) gave him enough assurance to move forward with Red-Eyes as his ace. How about this: Mask of Binding Equip Spell Effect1: The equipped monster has its effects negated (even if the monster has an effect that makes it unaffected by card effects), but its original attack becomes 2000. Effect2: You can select the equipped monster as a tribute for your ritual or tribute summon, but your opponent gains 2000 LP and does not take damage until your next end phase. Thoughts? (Two turns may seem harsh, but your countering super strong monster effects, so the drawback must even things out.)

Tea' winning vs Crump because Yugi had a nearby Dark Magician. That bothered me despite the fact that I wanted the Big 5 to lose. Also Yugi vs the Exodia rare hunter. He did something with Alpha and Summoned Skull with "static electricity" to win in one turn, when he should've come up short of lethal by 100 LP.
