Helpful content but when the speaker is pointing to the graphic or using the laser pointer it would be helpful to show the graphic, rather than the speakers face!

How can I add additional batteries to an NMEA network? For example, my boat has a Garmin 943 display and I just added a 24v trolling setup and want to monitor the battery voltages on my Garmin gauges display? What cable, device or ??? Do I need to add that into my existing NMEA network?

Would i be able to use a balmar external voltage regulator for a gas powered generator? Since its spinning a big alternator. I'm just worried about voltage raiting and running the coile at a lower voltage than what they were designed for.

The standard alternator on my Volvo D1-30B outputs approx 13.9 volts at 2,300RPM. Will this be damaging my 75Ah AGM starter battery and 2x 95Ah AGM Service Batteries, both of which require 14.4v bulk/absorption and 13.5v float?

Does AGM batteries require a special charge regulator unlike a lead acid battery that doesn’t, similar to that of a lithium battery?

My solar is slowly charging my lithium batteries. I 'm connected to shore power but my non-lithium controller will only charge my lithium batteries to about 75%. My solar usually will charge the batteries from 75% to $100 on sunny days. I'm in a shaded area nd so my solar can't charge batteries to 100%. Can I connect an external 20amp lithium battery charger directly to batteries and charge the batteries to 100% while the solar charger is trying to do the same thing?

I have recently got a 48v victor Inverter My old inverter was 24v the panels are 24v (38v), I was wondering would it be do able to connect the 4x 100ah 12v batteries in series to get the 48V, then 2 panels to charge 2 of the batteries and the other 2 on the other two batteries? cause I don't think my panels support series (we got them at an auction so there was no information on them)

I bought a used sailboat in Panama. I spend the winters on it. The boat has no MMSI number on it's radio. It is registered in Panama, so I can't get one from the US Coast Guard. At the local Maritime office (Bocas del Toro) I think the guy didn't know what it was! The national Maritime web sites are impenetrable and geared entirely to ships weighing 100s of tons. Is there any international service that grants MMSI numbers?

Questtion on this MPPT controller. I hae 2 house to start batteries on my boat. Got to the boat and app said they were floating. Showed 20v from 2 100 watt panels 0 amps. When my boat is running my battery monitor shows -1.59 amp draw? Why? The voltage is 14.8 from motors. Shunt is installed correct to a neg bus bar. All house loads are off during readings. This also has a ACR

Good stuff. I'd say that when you inherit a boat or even an old house you should be suspicious of everything including wire colors. I've been electrocuted once or twice before the advent of the chicken stick due to questionable wiring practice. My favorite example when telling people to be sure is my mom's house which was built before they metered electricity. Someone failed to run all the power through the meter and so even with the meter pulled some of the very old (knob and tube) circuits were still hot. I also have a comment on the DC ground. The ground plane is relative to the battery positive. The body of water you are sitting in is relative to nothing. Adding some connection to the water will not provide a better scenario in terms of power or safety. The reason the engine is grounded is happenstance related to the automotive origins and the starter. Consider a car which has no connection to the ground underneath it or electronics which strive to not be connected to the chassis to keep the DC clean. AC power on land wants the ground and the system is regularly grounded to the earth which acts as a ground plane. Even so there are still isolated ground AC circuits where the ground, say on conduit, is kept separate from the ground wire. The issue is that there is generally noise from RF that generates a delta between the neutral's idea of ground and a bare wire ground in conduit and this can create issues. In such systems I have seen as much as 40 volts of delta. Once we get back to the panel everything is tied back together and run to ground via the same cable. On a boat that is not in a marina AC power is a self contained system where the hot/neutral/ground are relative to the source which is contained on the boat. When you get to the marina and use shore power then the ground is relative to the earth. I guess my other comment is land based electricians for sure care about voltage drop and distance. If you are going more than 50' you will up-size the cable. The difference is the distances are much further which is also why large buildings, e.g. a factory, run high voltage e.g. 480V v.s. 240 and also use 3-phase v.s. split phase.

Would it be a good idea to run all the charging currents threw a single DC to DC converter like the Victron Orion TR 12/12-50 ? Kind regards, Carlos

Hi there, could you please let me know what size amp fuse I need for my 100w solar kit thats just been delivered? Its a free stranding type for it to stand next to my campervan (RV) next to the battery box/compartment. Noticed a guy on a camp site a few weeks ago that he had his fuse in his battery compartment/box. Not sure if he had a fuse in another place somewhere else near his controller though I didn't notice that as I just walked past and noticed his breaker/fuse was inside his battery compartment/box when his battery box door was open/down for some reason. (He might of swapped batteries I dont know) Thanks.

I was going to give this a pass but decided to give it a quick shot. It was time well spent for sure and I know a decent amount about electrical systems. One comment - fuses/breakers are always sized based on the wire because that is what they are supposed to protect. The wire is (should be) sized to the load. This is a niggly point but if the fuse is sized to the load but the wire is too small then you are going to have a problem that will only get worse as age takes its toll. If the wire is oversize then you can size the fuse to the load but this is typically not the case.

Sorry but radar is not no frills--on a sailboat you almost never use it--beats up the battery banks. Same with windspeed indicator, you can just look up on top of the mast for direction and with the windspeed, you can just feel and look at the sails and water speed to get that. AIS is also not no frills. After watching this video and taking his advice, you just wipped up a typical electrical package for a sailboat. No insights here.

Three years ago, I went from a Tanzer 22 to a CS33. The learning curve on boat systems has been steep, the worst being about the electrical system, which I had sorted out by a marine electrician, based on the pre-purchase inspection. Everything was going reasonably fine until my Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger refused to power-up following the starting and house batteries discharge. This issue brought my attention back to my lack of knowledge about the electrical system. I am usually good at learning through reading technical books, but this topic is definitely my Achilles Tendon. A friend of mine sent me the link to your presentation on inverters and I can't thank him enough. I started going through your series of 30 instructional videos and my threshold knowledge has increased tenfold. So yes, I definitely relate to your introduction on this one and thank you for taking the time to make your videos available to the larger public.

a FET or MOSFET is a transistor. A transistor is a controlled diode with a gate. In my book it will loose equivalent to a diode based (maybe slightly less). Why does the heatsink a similar size then ????. Forget Isolator, in 2024 go with DC-DC converters with a diigital charging profile like the Victron DC-DC. You batteries will say thank you...
