Howdy y'all!! I was born in Premium Kentucky on March 4th 1949 in a little house on the Rock castle river, and during a snow storm that day. Dad had to ride a horse out to get Doc Collier because he'd gotten his car stuck in the snow. They got back in time and Doc helped Mom to deliver me. 🙃! Yup. Dad named me Maurice after Maurice Reynolds who he went through WWII against Japan. They both enlisted right after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. But when I was born and my two year old sister,Hazel Louise, now married to Clyde Moore, started calling me George! Maybe after my uncle, George B Riddle, one of dad's older brothers. Mom was a Collins born to Charlie Collins and Christina Cornett. They've all died but I know I'll see them again soon, in Heaven! Yup, because they were all believers in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!! AND Amen!! I just watched this video along with a few others and took the time to say hello to all that may read this someday. So, howdy y'all!! 😉😉!!! I know we still have a lot of relatives down there, and others in Tennessee, Virginia,North Carolina, Grandpa Riddle was an Old regular Baptist preacher over the years and his father was from North Carolina. There is a Riddle N.C up in the North East corner of that state. My how God has spread us all over the world huh cousins?? Yup. And who knows, uhhh except God! ☺️😉!!,maybe we'll run into each other somewhere in our lives journeys... Yup, you just never huh?? God bless you all and your families, and keep y'all safe!! AND "TO BE CONTINUED..." Revelations chapters 21 and 22 !! Yup. 😉😊😇😜💝💖💗💓💞💕🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👋👋👋

My dad was born near Tuggle hollow ky. Twelve siblings. Grandma bathed them in the spring at Shady acres. The family owns the mineral rights to the fresh spring mountain water to this day. Some of us moved back to the area ten years ago. Appreciate what our ancestors did for us. We have running water and electricity. Such a blessing. No big houses or boats. Just ...Simple living. Blessings to all who read. Thanks to the one who posted.❤️🙏🌞

Grew up in Perry County. This lady is sweet and earnest, but I’d love to hear from the black people she grew up near and whether they thought there was racism. I suspect their take would be different from hers.

She sounds so much like my granny. My granny and granddad lived in Arkansas til they moved to Missouri. My mom grew up poor and granddad never allowed conveniences such as indoor plumbing and a tv. They lived on a self sufficient farm. Thinking back on stories I’ve been told, I wonder if my ancestors came from the Appalachia area. Only because of the similarities.

Born, raised and currently live in the Appalachian Mountains!! I was raised by my Grandmother whom was born in the 1930s and I was a very curious child so I asked a ton of questions, looking back now, sure glad I did!! 37 now and looking back on my childhood, and honestly I wouldnt change it or trade it 1 bit, sure we were poor and o ly went as far as your feet would take ya and I sidnt have what the other kids had, toys andsuch, but I had something much more valuable!! I had the morals and character instilled in me of ancestors past and I'm very thankful!! Never paid attention to my accent until I was up North lol youveould think you were speaking another language by the looks you would get lol most couldnt get enough lol say this, say that lol.. I've talked to people who were raised in other parts of the Country and indeed what I here is very different than the childhood I had, but it a good way really!! I could go anywhere in town and be safe and watched out for as everyone knew everyone!! I thought it was like that everywhere, I was wrong... What a unique thing, I can go 2 States over and still be at home, still know the people, still be family, and that is immeasurable in my opinion!!! God Bless my Appalachian Family, let's keep what we can of our past and the wonderful people that never gave up and gave us our way!!!

Thanks for this- I love the self respect she has and the down home clarity of what really matters. I also liked the commentary on what 'poor' folks thought of the 'wealthy' ones with Johnson in the pictures- false decency - just advertising themselves at others expense. thanks again.

Watched this several Times! Love it! Brings back memories of growing up in that beautiful country. I helped daddy & my older brother cut timber, "doodled" sawdust with a homemade wheelbarrow at the sawmill & dug coal all over eastern KY. Started when I was but 9 yrs old! Me & my older brother have worked 10, 12 hours in snow up to our knees with nothing on our feet but strips of rags & a pair of low cut storm rubbers on our feet. Go in the house at night & sit by the stove or fireplace & beat the ice out of the rags to get them off our feet. Daddy & mama worked like brutes to raise 9 kids! Daddy only made 3 dollars a day till he got a raise to 6 dollars a day in 1957. I realize now how hard life was growing up without electricity or running water & making do but we never thought about it then. I'm now 76 but all the years have not been able to erase those precious memories of homemade bibb overalls, feedsack shirts, walking to school barefooted with frost on the ground & carrying my dinner -- cornbred, soup beans , fried taters & a onion -- in a 4 pound lard bucket & a whiskey bottle of home churned buttermilk in my hip pocket! There was never a shortage whiskey bottles for daddy made & sold corn whiskey to help raise us kids! Me & my older brother helped daddy cook many a run of "shine" on an old wood & coal cook stove in our kitchen! I have been around the world & lived & worked all over the USA but Eastern Kentucky will always be HOME! I guess one might say , "You can take a Briar out of Kentucky buy you can NEVER take Kentucky out of a Briar"!!

My mom's families from Elkton, Kentucky,& my grandma said she grew up in the depression, she said that her mom canned food from their garden, smoked their own meats, deer pigs, turkeys greatgrandad hunted or raised. She said flour came in cloth sacks pretty designs, her mother made dresses out of flour sacks. She churned her own butter,I remember her old wood burning cook stove.Coal burning 2 fireplaces.Great memories..And greatgrandad had dairy cows so they had fresh milk I remember that too.Oh and her well water outside the side of her house.Greatgranny Winders kept 2 metal pots with dippers in her kitchen full of ice cold well water for us to drink just inside the back door, her nephew came daily to hand pull up her well water I was about 4-5 years old I remember that.Im 59 now.She had no in door bathroom, but she made do.Cleanest house you ever visited she kept a wash bowl to bath with. She had electricity, indoor plumbing,Electric new stove, refused to use the new stove.Kept her old Iron wood burning stove in the huge dining room she had she liked her new refrigerator though. She did as the old English ancestors did in primitive times, she kept the old pot/lid,under her bed for she couldn't go to the outhouse...Gross to say but was the truth. She still kept her oil lamps in every room. She grew up no electricity,no indoor plumbing none..She preferred it that way my great grandmother.

My parents are from Eastern KY and my father beat me to smithereens a couple times and I didn’t even do anything wrong because I was afraid to. My parents divorced and Dad remarried and told me never contact him again because his new wife was jealous of me. I put my dad on a pedestal and he never even deserved it and he dumped me. He complains my MINOR children never came over. How whacky is that? Who was supposed to bring them? They sure never offered to pick them up. My dad is 80 now and it still hurts.

My mother grew up in a rural area of eastern Kentucky. Her father was a coal miner, like everyone elses in that area. I don't know exactly what life was like for her, but i do know we have no idea what poor is today. No clue. People might think they are poor today, they are not.
