I really appreciate you making this video and the others you have made. They are really good and inspirational. Im a retired US Army UH-60 Blackhawk pilot. I retired 21 years ago (2003) and that was the last time I flew a Blackhawk. Ive never been in or ever even flown in any small aircraft. Im retiring permanently in 2 years at the age of 62. I live in Atlanta and Ive been a US postal carrier for many years. I deliver mail to a small aircraft subdivision here called Mallards Landing, and it totally fascinates me everyday Im in there to see Pipers, Cessna's, and various other aircraft sitting in the front yard or in a hanger in the driveway of the homes there...what a cool subdivision!! The aviation bug has come back to me after all these years and Im going to go to flight school here in Atlanta and get my private pilots license The Piper 140 is the aircraft i would like to own, so I hope I get to train in one as well. I have no idea what the transition is going to be for me never even flying in a small plane, and being totally out of aviation for over two decades, but Im going to do it. Thanks for the motivation your videos have given me and I look forward to the day of getting my private pilots license and eventually owning a Piper 140. I would love any advice from you or any of your veteran pilots and subscribers.
@blueyonder360Ай бұрын
First off, thank you for your service. Secondly, thanks for watching and for commenting. Blackhawk pilot…that’s awesome. Just like being a Veteran, that’s quite the 1%’ers club title not a lot of people can say. How cool, I can only imagine the stories you have of your experience piloting the Blackhawk. I’m also exciting to hear your aviation bug is back and that you’re learning a new skill. The Cherokee 140 is a fantastic, stable platform for training and for building hours. We bought ours from a retired Naval Aviator that was located at KLZU just north east of ATL. I have family that lives in that area too. The only advice I have for your transition is to enjoy every moment of it. I’m not sure what the transition training will be but I can assure you your takeoffs and landings will be a little different than what you are previously used to😉. Best of luck to you in this journey to PPL.

And I feel I have to say something to you. 3:28 I don't see torque plates on engine with two cylinders removed. Search "Savvy Aviation Cylinder Work Risky Business" and watch the video. It's a long video and Mike Busch talks really slowly, so I like to watch at 2x. But seriously, watch the first 45 minutes of that video. If I were in your shoes, I would want to send an email to AOPA's "ask the A&Ps" podcast. Mike Busch is on that podcast. I'd ask them what to do next to make sure the engine is still fine. Honestly, I hope I'm grossly overreacting and this isn't an issue at all.

Good, but tough question to answer. I ended up purchasing 55R when I was about 20 hrs into my PPL flight training. I was having a hard time booking consistent time in flight school planes due to how busy my flight school was at the time. I came across this plane and felt like it was something I couldn’t pass up. And I knew I would be flying it after I got my PPL. In today’s market and not knowing any details of the ‘67 I would say it will retain its current value.

I don't know how I missed this video from you. I'm really glad you didn't just rely on the compression but also got a borescope. So many people let compression be the definitive status of the cylinders rather than look more deeply. Given the state of your valves, I think you're making the right call to pull the cylinders. And completely agree with owning a borescope and using it every time the sparkplugs are pulled. Savvy has a video on how to do a standard borescope inspection so that you can build an evolving picture over time. I also had to replace the lord mounts on my 140. The engine mounts alone probably wouldn't have been too crazy, but I decided to also install an engine monitor. If I'd have known that I was going to end up selling the airplane a few months later I certainly would not have installed an engine monitor. Sorry you're going through this. Your airplane is - by far - my favorite Cherokee 140 in existence. I'm actually in the process of writing a video about how much I admire your airplane. Not enough for me to help with the repair costs, though. So sorry. :) Hope the repair costs are within reason.

Yeah, the book says for a no flap take off to accelerate to 50-60 mph then ease back on the yoke. Our field elevation is 5119 ft. and the book numbers are based off of sea level, so we accelerate a little more before she feels like she wants to fly.

It’s easy to do. I’ve done a few hundred inspections on every type of Piper from a Cub to a Cheyenne. Lots in the Cherokee and Seneca line. Great little airplanes. May I ask why the shop wants to have your engine mount reconditioned? That’s typically done at an engine change. Exterior surface corrosion can just be stopped with a rust converter and painted over.

A Cherokee 140 with an O-360 and a constant speed prop isn't your normal 140. Pretty sure if you were racing my fixed pitch, 0-320 140 you'd beat me by a lot on time. That said, I did help out a buddy in his Cherokee 235. He was taking his airplane to an airport 120 nm away for some avionics work. I took off about 10m before he did and he landed 2m before me. It took him a surprisingly long time to catch and pass me, despite going about 25 knots faster. Which raises a question for me: how does this competition work? Is there a handicap system? 12:27 Too bad re: the arrow on short final, otherwise "Request short approach" 13:11 Why not zero flap landing? 27:43 Apparently no handicapping I wonder if what you could do is take the book 75% cruise speed of each airplane and then calculate an optimal travel time there and back and then compare your actual time to the theoretical optimal time. Smallest number wins. Regardless this looked like a lot of fun. I would love to do something like this.
@blueyonder3607 ай бұрын
I love how much your reply shows your interest level in the competition/video. My little 140 has a little something extra under the hood. The group that participated certainly has some things to think about during our next flight club meeting on how to make things fair. Our sole intention was to get a group of planes together, have the same mission and see what kind of time you can put up, then have a good time at the hangar party afterwards. I jokingly told the group I was bringing a Comanche 250 next year😉.

I was flying my Cherokee from Westerly RI to Fort Myers FL and had a similar electrical issue. I declared an emergency with Dover approach and was able to land safely at an airport in DE. Took two days of troubleshooting to discover nothing was wrong (that the A&P could find anyway). He signed off on it, I took off and within 20 minutes the ammeter was at 0 again. I shut off everything nonessential and left the transponder and one radio on. Discovered I could reset the breakers and it would bring the charging system back to life. That lasted all the way to SC. Topped off, flew on to Palatka FL but it was getting dark and didn’t want to chance night flying with a balky charging system. Glad you made it ok!!

Wow! Scary situation. Glad it turned out well. I had my transponder do the same thing when I was holding short before takeoff. But it was at a towered airport and not only did my transponder fail, but so did my COM1. Which made cancelling the flight very easy. Fortunately, I had just enough battery left that COM2 was still working and I could tell tower my issues. My mechanic is on the field and he came straight over. By the time he got there, the battery didn't have enough charge to start the engine. After a bunch of diagnostics, he concluded that the alternator was dead. When I went back and looked at the engine monitor data for the previous 2 flights, I could see evidence of the alternator slowing dying. Bus voltage dropped from about 13.5 a couple of flights before down to about 9 volts on the last flight. But that all happened on the ground. I'd like to think if I were in the air, I'd handle it as well as you did. I'd also like to never have to find out.
@blueyonder36010 ай бұрын
Something I hope you never experience either. I now have an alternator inop light installed right next to the stall warning light. Since I don’t have a digital engine monitor to see volts, this will alert me if the alternator is not operating as it should. On this particular event, I tried to restart the engine after shutting everything down and the battery didn’t have any juice to get it going. Both magnetos were running fine once they fired up.
