I liked this enough to subscribe. Did you indtall the om606 yourself? I'm thinking of putting an om606 or om617 into my Iveco 90 (Canadian LSVW).

Yes, I did the install of the OM606 myself, it took quite a while .... Hopefully yours is a bit more straightforward and you have a bit more room available!

Love Unimogs and love the OM606. Everything here in one package. If you have any fix-up vids coming out, I'll definitely watch.

Thanks, it does bring a smile to my face every time I use it! Took a long time to build - couldn't afford a real one so built it..... Work was heating/water supplies/engineering, but looking at other things after heart attack, hence the KZfaq try out!!

Thanks for that chaos mog great video every thing I wanted have just spent 30 mins on slow speed completely sad thanks for all your trouble much appreciated just have to go away and do it now have been going through my photos I am going to put up a slide show in a couple of days do you have a note of what vehicles that flywheel and starter were used on John

+MrMuseumman Hi, starter came with engine - ie standard. Flywheel is Merc part number: 1110320801 A1110320801. I think it is from a Sprinter van, but am not 100% sure.... You do need to trim the existing crank angle sensor lip off it - it catches on the block on the OM606 - but doesn't matter if you are using a mechanical pump. Good luck with it, look forward to seeing how you get on.

Hi chaosmog Great Conversion you must be desperate to drive it I stumbled across your videos a few days ago I am very impressed with your work the funny thing is 3 years ago I bought a 404 with no engine and a merc 124 estate with an om606 and that's as far as it got they have stood in my yard ever since your vids have got me fired up again I know its an imposition but would it be ok for me to ask a couple of questions

Yes, no problem, I am indeed looking forward to the first drive. Alas work tends to get in the way! But I am determined to get it back together this year.

+TheChaosmog Thanks for that my idea was to use the unimog flywheel clutch and starter motor but of course starter is on wrong side the only way I could make the space would be to rotate the engine to the vertical and cut a lump from the block but that put the pump where my right leg should be and was not good for engine lubrication etc I have watched your vid over and over I can see where you have starter but cant work it out can you give me some pointers and have you used standard pump with can electronics for turbo enrichment have you modded it or swapped the pump hope you can help thanks John

Hi, I used a mercedes flywheel with a spacer plate machined to fit the unimog heavy duty clutch. The part number is in the comments section of one of the other vids. To be honest if I were to do it again I would make a new bellhousing to suit. With an adapter plate it makes the clutch a real bear - as I said it ended up with a spacer plate and a parrallelogram mechanism to space out the thrust bearing and keep it all true. The extra work to make a bellhousing offsets a heck of a cost in machine work - it also moves the engine back about 40mm, enough to not modify the front cross member as I have had to. It also allows for simpler cooling fan and compressor drives. The only downside to this is it will make moving the passenger seat necessary. Use the OM606 as it is (tilted), the original starter fits under the floor bar a tiny bit, the oil filter needs to be remote though. I made an intake manifold out of 100mm tube I think. The injection pump is from a naturally aspirated OM602/3, DieselpumpUK sell a variety of these giving up to 500hp if required. I expect to tune this pump up a bit and get around 120hp - this should be safe with the transmission. I have had some interest in producing a bellhousing, if I get any time after this is running I may do so as I still have the templates from this one. Good luck with yours, I would be interested to see how you get on!

+TheChaosmog Thanks for that its a big help I will bring it in workshop and make it my winter project for this year when I start work I will do a vid would you be interested in selling or sharing your adapter plate templates I would be willing to buy a copy what ever you think fit best wishes John

+MrMuseumman I am not sure if my templates are good enough to send, they were modified a couple of times along the way....... If you can lay your hands on an old petrol block and the steel adapter plate that came with it, I am happy to tell you how I went about it - but I have to say I still think a replacement bell housing is the way to go. I can also take some close up photos if of any help. One other reason I chose not to try and adapt the standard flywheel is that it has a large balance weight cast into it - I was not comfortable with taking all of that material off and re-drilling/starter motor issues etc. It may be possible, but it worried me too much. Another option that did cross my mind was extending the gearbox input shaft and making a larger spaced parallelogram to operate the clutch. the unimog clutch could then be fitted direct to the mercedes (OM606) flywheel - much simpler for the actual clutch bit. I should add, it is not necessary to totally move the front crossmember, you could leave about 20/30mm of it in place and re-box/strengthen as needed.

Hi, I seem to remember it was from an OM603, it came from a normally aspirated unit. I am ging to open it up a little - I'm not too worried if I can't get the standard 150hp, around a 100 - 120 will be fine! Plus I stand less chance of ruining the transmission....

Hi Phil, I used flywheel Merc part number: 1110320801 A1110320801 But, though it does bolt straight on, it does require an additional steel disc to space it out enough for the clutch to work. I would strongly recommend making a new bellhousing rather than a conversion plate like I have. With hindsight making a new bellhousing would have meant that no chassis crossmembers would need to be modified, and it would also allow the engine to be back enough to fit a standard cooling fan. Good luck!

Hi, thanks - I just wish that I could find the time to finish it off! I have not written it up anywhere I'm afraid, but if anyone wants any info or advice I am happy to help. I have to say that if I were to do another I would probably do a couple of things differently, but in general it seems to be successful in terms of solidity and fit to the 404!

Thanks for the kind words, it was bought as a chassis cab with a siezed and badly fitted OM617, the cab is full steel and in relatively good condition - that's what swayed me to buy it...! I looked at rebuilding the OM617 and turbocharging it, but it was cost prohibitive to do properly. The OM606 was the best match in terms of rpm range to the original petrol, so I thought I would have a go. If I did another I would make a new bellhousing rather than go with an adaptor plate conversion!
