How do you know that any of the Bee Gees play the instruments on these songs. Everything other than the vocals that were done by 12-year-old girls were probably played by the Wrecking Crew don't kid yourself.

You pronounced his name right. Good on you. They're Weish and that's how they pronounce it. Same with the Irish. My irish grandfather was also a Maurice.

Yeah, I tease about the Bee Gee's because, well DISCO but you make a great point. Those bass lines are pretty good.

Grew up in the 70's (born in 63) wasn't a fan of disco, really loved the funk. But also, being a band geek helps me appreciate MG bass playing. Thanks!!!

I never noticed how good he really was. They were so good that they were literaly forced out of their artistic carrer.

Nights on Broadway has a bassline played on a Moog (or ARP 2600) and was played by Blue Weaver, not Maurice, though he may have written the line.

Larry Graham was before Maurice. Larry influenced them all.

The Disco Inferno was lit long before the Bee Gees by black women, the LGBTQ community and people of colour. The BeeGees just capitalized on it late in the game.

It is unfortunate that you are giving the impression that the Bee Gees were only about disco. They were already very successful before they leaned into a blue eyed soul direction in the 70s. Maurice Gibb certainly deserves recognition and accodales, but you make it sound like he invented the bass groove for disco when he didn't.

It's like 50's surf lead on bass.

Maurice was legend, not recognized as the talent he was. Did you know that Maurice was the only BeeGee that handled the booth/engineering/production contribution on all their albums. Keyboards, Bass and production along with contributing songwriting..

I’m really blown away by how much he was such an expert yet no one hardly said ANYTHING about it! The only time I’ve heard that he was a bass player ( not how damn good he was) is when they were called to come up with some music for the disco flick. Barry Gibb said that Maurice would lay down the bass track. When I heard of this I just thought that it was just a scratch pad for what they wanted to sound never knowing he was the man that really came up with the bass lines. I thought they had studio musicians do that.

Thanks, he has been one of my biggest influences since I picked up the bass guitar 18 years ago (at 50!) One thing first; while JJ played on a lot of the songs, you also have to give a lot of credit for Motown's huge influence to Bob Babbitt. He also had many of those hits, and some of those are monster bass recordings! Midnight Train to Georgia, oh, my!!! Both were pretty amazing, techniques and composition, but I think that the biggest thing was how much serious GROOVE oozed out of the two of them. And the synergy with the equally marvelous drummers was part and parcel of it!!! The other thing: If you want to check out JJ at arguably his finest - Home Cookin' with Jr. Walker and the All Stars. Smmmmokin'!!!!!
