My papaw got attacked by those when I was a kid while mowing. Later that night we went to the hole and he poured gasoline in it and spray foamed the hole. That took care of them.

Threat thing is untrue. Stepped on a yellow jacket mound whem i was around 8 or so. Read in a book, that they have motion based vision. So i stood real still, and as 20 or more flew around me, nothing happened. I VERY slowly backed away and avoided them. Fun story to tell. I used this afterwards to get up close, about a foot away, from paper wasps on our fence at eye level. They would watch me, and i would watch them. Years later, 2022, I used this again when getting feed and hay for the birds from our greenhouse. Both of them. Yellow jackets, AND paper wasps. On both sides of rhe place. Yellows were in the hay, and the papers were on the opposite table, on the underside. Noped out and refused to continue. I was NOT about to open a nest, bare handed. Don't think playing jurassic park would save that situation. Only time I've been stung is when a yellow got drunk on sugar at a snowcone stand and took vengeance on my foot. I uh. Had been still for 5 minutes, not even looking. But. Bugs get drunk off the stuff in sugars, and not even they would drive safe. Hurt for 3 days. Don't blame em tho.

They are a pain the arse sometimes our hornets here in the U.K. they are bigger than your species in the states so cause more damage when they nest in your house. We had one in our extension roof and they caused £1,500 of damage.
