Also why did you set it up from your personal account when a neighbor clicks on your personal profile can they see you are a business owner or no? Just trying to figure out why add my business page from my personal account and use my personal email to manage my business account if there’s no other advantage other than not having to login in to my business account? Can you elaborate? Thank you

I set it up from my personal account because I had a personal account for a few years before I started the business. When a neighbor sees my personal profile they can see a statement under my name that I own a handyman company but there is no direct link to my business page.

Thanks for the comment. The proper way to do it is transfer money from your personal account into Novo and label it as revenue (cash payment from customer for invoice). Then you can do whatever you want with the cash.

That's pretty neat. I just don't like the idea of having a set price for labor because of the variables. Take your fan for instance. You get the job for $150, then you show up, and it's mounted to a 15' vaulted ceiling, and there isn't a fan rated box. Now I need to double the price and the customer is like wtf. There is always a curve ball thrown at me. Keep up the great content brother!

Do you have any advice on coming up with a good name? Thanks!
@Handymanprocess5 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment. As for the name I would keep it simple. Think about what you would like your business to be in 5 years and where you want to be working. In my case I wanted to be known as a Handyman in my local area so ended up using my neighborhood name “Greenshire” and the word “Handyman”. Greenshire Handyman. In hindsight I probably should have used my city name “Schertz” or Schertz Handyman. When people look for a handyman they are usually looking local so that’s a good strategy (city name + handyman)

Hey AJ, FWIW, I really enjoyed the Simple Path series. I’m pretty analytical and appreciate the clarity and structure of those videos. I believe that, before being a handy person, one has to be a business person and it seems the downfall for many is disorganized business practices and processes. Just retired after 27 years w the fire service and have taken Atalaya Handyworks full time! Learning so much about estimating, scheduling/logistics and, most importantly LISTENING to homeowners. Each house visit reminds me of running a call w the fd (show up, often at a total stranger’s house and work WITH them to solve a problem). I owe a lot of my success to your videos and am very thankful.

I've never lost money on a job. I think if you have, you screwed up big time. I've got it dialed in where I have good days or great days moneywise. Last year, my first year in this business, I averaged $81/hr. I think my lowest job i made $35/hr. To me, that was a bad day. This year so far will be much better. My advice to all the new guys: estimate a job, and before you send the estimate, edit it and add 30% to it! You'll be amazed how many still get accepted.
@Handymanprocess20 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I had a few jobs when I first started where I drastically under estimated time. As a result I ended up making about $13/hr when it was all said and done on those jobs. I’ve learned a great deal since then and no longer make that mistake. These days I average about $100/hr and do some jobs for free for those who really need it.

An idea for a future video, and an issue which I'm interested in is job estimate calculations. Could you perhaps give examples of types of jobs where many unknowns can end up costing more time, especially when customers are unable to clarify details in written correspondence?

Thank you for the comment. At the end of the year, you can extract the report. Then you multiply the amount of miles you have by the IRS mileage deduction amount and that’s what you can deduct from your gross revenue. You can watch my text playlist for some more information on that.

I just started using Markate and have a few questions for you. I assume your customers are all paying the credit card processing fee? One of the main reasons I went with Markate is the elegant way that they handle this fee. Apps like joist build it into thr quote as a markup across line items. Super confusing. Also have you figured out a way to show an "arrival window" when scheduling an appointment? I hate the calendar in Markate and especially having to select an end time. If ot was just start time with an arrival window it would be gold for me. Thanks
@HandymanprocessАй бұрын
Thank you for the comment; all my customers who pay by credit card pay the fee but I don’t advertise it separately I just make it part of doing business like a restaurant. To compensate for this fee I just add a little bit to each estimate. As for the arrival time and window I’m a part-time guy and only take on a few jobs so I always select the exact time and show up then. I realize it’s a little tougher if you’re a full-time business with several jobs in a day. In that case I would tell the customer maybe the ranges between one and 3 o’clock and then on Markate just schedule for 2 o’clock and adjust as necessary.
