@@Lilium_Archive Almost four years ago after I first watched and became obsessed with Re:ZERO I tried reading the web novel but then I came to the point where they hadn't translated. Not Witch-Cult nor any other translation had most of arcs 2 and 3. They've made a bit of progress since then but still none of them have most of arcs 2 and 3 because they're mainly focused on translating new chapters (and Tappei writes fast af, which is a good thing, but it means the translators have quite the pace to keep up with). And I just couldn't bring myself to skip those arcs, even if they were in the anime. So finally over a year later, about a year and a half ago I started reading the web novel in Japanese on the original website. My Japanese had progressed to a degree where I could do some reading but I still didn't know a lot of words and didn't remember or know a lot of kanji. And I had to stop every sentence to look up a kanji word in the dictionary. So to force myself to remember I started writing down every kanji I ran into and didn't know while reading Re:ZERO in a notebook. Did that until about November, I was at a point where I had remembered enough Kanji to not need to write so many down, and because of that the slow-down caused by writing them wasn't worth it anymore. So after that I just read and simply looked up words I didn't know without writing, and I managed to read all of arc 1 in 2023. May not sound very impressive, and it's not, I slacked off a lot. But it's progress I'm proud of. Anyway, now I've finally gotten to the point where I am reading chapters that have not been translated by Witch-Cult Translations. I'm on arc 2 chapter 36. Sorry for writing all this if it was boring. I love Re:ZERO.

My Japanese it still early beginner level but I’ve gotten to the point now that I can read hiragana but I don’t understand the words 😂. I would like to learn Japanese but kanji is so intimidating that it discourages me from trying to learn it. Hopefully eventually I’ll have the time to really sit down and learn it. Anyway it is cool to see how re:zero and many other forms of media has encouraged people to learn a new language. Congratulations on your progress! As someone who has spent time learning it I know how difficult it is to get to where you are.

@@Lilium_Archive Thanks! I'm no expert but the best recommendation I can give if you really want to be invested in learning the language is consistency. And try to look into all sorts of different resources/methods to study and practice. Everything I find seems to have a different strong suit in how it helps you learn. I honestly didn't know many kanji before I started reading Re:ZERO, it's been my main source of study for that. What I'm personally most lacking in is pronunciation/tone accent skills, mainly because I don't really have any opportunity to practice speaking Japanese. I also still have a long way to go. But yeah, I think that as far as reading goes you should focus on hiragana and katakana until you're solid on those and then worry about kanji, and really the best way to learn kanji is just to learn written vocabulary. Studying the individual kanji themselves has merit but you'll learn to read faster by focusing on vocabulary. Good luck!
