If you ever make another tombstone, I would suggest buying a piece of round stock. Have a local shop turn the ends to establish the end bosses you want for your A frame & rotary bore. Then mount the thing in your machine and then facemill each face to size. This will keep the setup perfectly square to the spindle on each rotation. I would also create a light witness cut along the top of A0. & A90. so if you ever take the setup out, you have an established datum to tram it back in.

The definition of toughness is the amount of ENERGY (not torque or force) required to break the material in a standardized way. The test uses a falling hammer to strike the test sample of notched metal, and the height of the fall is increased until the sample fails. The test shown here is not a toughness test. The toughest steels will withstand a ten pound weight falling from 3 to 5 feet high, a very brittle steel perhaps only 6 inches high drop would break the sample. Look up "Charpy (or Izod) impact test" Toughness is not the same as strength or hardness, but they are related. At the same hardness, AEB-L is much tougher than S35VN. Usually (but not always) the softer the steel, the tougher it is.
@VitalyMack
@VitalyMack 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing AEB-L is much tougher than all those modern SVN steels. And really the test should have been conducted on a pre-cut chunk of metal. I also, don't understand using an already broken blade as a strength test.

You might want to consider raising your motor so that the lower unit is out of the water and out of the way. It's a safety thing idea so no one bumps into it with their noodle.

Very interesting. The general consensus in knife forums would be that Aebl is significantly tougher than s35vn with the latter having much better wear resistance. Probably why you are getting a lot of comments regarding your outcome. Because of the results people will want to know how each were heat treated. If anything this proves you cannot judge a steel based on purely the material. How hard is the titanium?

@poseidonmarine
@poseidonmarine 10 ай бұрын
No it was not
@Vamtal
@Vamtal 10 ай бұрын
@@poseidonmarine Well that's the reason why AEB-L underperform in your test. 62 HRC is hardness suitable for cryo-treated AEB-L not conventional heat treatment. AEB-L without cryo-treatment at 62 HRC have retained austenite witch significantly reduce toughness.

How do you like the ride of the Tracker hull compared to a potter built? There is an '85 for sale near me I been watching for a awhile
@poseidonmarine
@poseidonmarine Жыл бұрын
It actually seems better to me but in all fairness the 23' potter hulls I have had were cabin models so you are farther up towards the bow when driving and not an apples to apples comparison. 85' shouldn't be a Tracker though that should be a CSY and they were built extremely well! I had a 85' 18' SF and that was a great boat!

You can use a battery monitoring system like the Victron to show current, amps, watts, watt hours, etc, all the electrical parameters, on a dash mounted water resistant standard opening round instrument, or a larger optional display, or even better is Bluetooth it on your phone screen off an app, no reason for more screens.

@poseidonmarine
@poseidonmarine Жыл бұрын
@@lorenzorosso-mai7444 They didn't work very well. Any kind of debris caused a leak and they were hard to clean out. I switched to the duckbill style scuppers and they work great but don't allow large amounts of water to exit. I am ok because I have a cut transom but with a full transom I would put large rectangular scuppers above the duckbills incase you take a wave over the bow and need to get a lot of water out quickly.
