For Christmas 2000 my wife got me a leather jacket with goodwrench on it, a Earnhardt jacket, I love that jacket and wear it proudly, NEVER liked Austin Dillon, he should NOT have the 3 car that # should have been retired!!!

The way he sat in a racecar was different than any other driver - his eye level wasn't much over the dashboard - It had to have contribute to the severity of the accident

I was born in 91. Racing in my blood. Dad and granddad both lived and breathed GM racing. I was a kid at this time but I remember all this stuff in the background. Remember my dad and his friends talking about why the 3 wasn’t performing. Being able to come back and watch these interviews is amazing to me

So this was 1997. He wanted to race another 5+ years. So that would mean he wanted to race into his early 50's. Not too far past 2001. That is sad....

I think it was The Winston one year; 2 heats. Leader of the first starts in the back for the second; that was Earnhardt. In ONE LAP, he was leading the second heat! Never saw such a commanding performance, not even Donohue and the turbo 917.

Larry Mac was in a no-win situation when he was Dale's crew chief. If they had won a bunch of races together everybody would have said, "Well, Dale is supposed to win!" But since they didn't have much success everybody said, "Well, I guess Larry Mac ain't as good as we thought he was." According to Larry Mac's autobiography he & Dale had a chance to talk a few months before his death & Dale told him during their time together he was still suffering from the effects from that Talladega crash from '96 & he felt that he & Larry Mac never got a fair shot with each other.

@@tomdalfonzo9959 As Larry Mac has always said, "I was just lucky enough to be his crew chief when he didn't run out of gas, didn't blow a tire, didn't hit a seagull." If they were only supposed to win one point race together, they certainly picked the right one!!!
@tomdalfonzo99593 жыл бұрын
@@joshowenby6408 Larry Mac was a great crew chief, as evidenced by his work at Robert Yates Racing with Davey Allison and Ernie Irvan. It is a real shame that he and Earnhardt only won once together.
@joshowenby64083 жыл бұрын
@@tomdalfonzo9959 I feel the same way. I remember when it was first announced that they were joining forces everybody thought it was going to be the greatest combo since Lennon & McCartney. As far as the Yates era is concerned I still remember when the team announced they wouldn't run Pocono after Davey's death. Larry Mac came up to the mic & tried to say a few words but he couldn't. He knew he had lost his golden ticket.

Switching his helmet wouldnt have kept his spinal chord from severing. Had they had the HANS he would 100% be alive. That or if Shrader was 10 more feet ahead of where he was beside Dale it wouldnt have sent Dale into that deathly angle.

I just never really liked the Larry McReynolds and Dale pairing, even though they won a Daytona 500 together they never really could get it done anywhere else and while they may have had a good relationship, they just could never get on the same page. I liked it a lot better when they switched and put Dale with Kevin Hamlin and Larry McReynolds with Mike Skinner and both drivers just had better outings after the switch.

In 2000, he ended up 2nd place in points, behind Bobby LaBonte. He was on his way to his 8th, but the good lord wanted Dale. Just goes to show, nothing will deny gods will. People say, it was a tragedy. He was killed doing something he loved. He knew the risk involved. He even said, if he was killed riding a farm tractor that flipped over, that’s a tragedy. Dying in a wreck, driving a stock car during a race, wasn’t.

That’s weird how dale says “4, 5, or 6 years left in Winston cup racing”. Which is realistically about how long he had after this interview. It would’ve been about 4 years until he passed away
@marshalllord5543 жыл бұрын
I thought so too. That, plus him saying he couldn't put a number on when he would retire. Eerily prophetic. I watched him since i was probably 12yrs old and now Im older than he was in this interview. He would have been 69 yrs old in April of 2020. Hundreds of thousands miss him everytime they watch a race, including me.
