Thanks for your video. Learned a lot. We’re planning to retire in the south of France. We’re from Los Angeles, mid fifties, so still young and would love an active life but enjoy the slower pace of the French. Any favorite towns or cities you love? We probably will not have a car in the first year. We would love a house or apartment but with outdoor space.. kinda like where you are in the video. Walking distance to cafes and restaurants etc… please let me know. Thanks!
@rivierago

Hi, sounds wonderful! Without a car and cafes in walking distance the cities like Nice, Antibes, Cannes sound best… it depends on what activities you like. If it’s hiking it’s easier with a car - but from Nice there are buses that take you easily into the hinterland/mountains. (Also from Cannes and Antibes, but that may be a little less convenient). But it’s not too likely to find a nice place with a garden in these places (well, depends on your budget also). We both live around 20 minutes off the coast. One of us has a beautiful garden - but needs the car for literally everything. The other is within walking distance to cafes and buses, but no garden. You could look around the lovely villages like Valbonne, Biot, Mougins: They are very international, within the respective old towns there won’t be gardens, but around the old towns you’ll find houses that offer both proximity and gardens. They come at a price, of course! Mind you: these villages are lively in the summer, but really calm in winter. If you want people all year round, Nice (and maybe Cannes and Antibes) is the place. Was that helpful?

@@rivierago Another question, what do you think of Avignon or Aix?
@rivierago
@rivierago 15 сағат бұрын
@@lisaupton5371 Both really, really lovely!!! Very different from one another, different from the French Riviera especially, but both so lovely, beautiful and full of cultural stuff to explore. And in the summer just so nice to hang out in the squares with restaurants in balmy evenings... To live there? I would suspect Avignon might become a little small after a while. Aix on the other hand: yes! Big enough, students, Marseille around the corner, even the Riviera not that far away.

@rivierago
@rivierago 7 күн бұрын
Hi, yes that’s true! It covers all cities in the department Alpes-Maritimes (Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Grasse, Menton, and the smaller places like Eze, Cap Ferrat, Saint-Paul-de Vence…) plus Monaco. Just be careful with trains: it only covers regional trains (TER), not high speed ones (TGV, going to or coming from Paris etc). @@rivierago I believe all tickets/passes need to be scanned in public transport. I think on tram and bus it’s simple, the machine is located inside. But trains dont have the scanner, as far as I can tell.
@rivierago
@rivierago 6 күн бұрын
Ah, got you! You’re right, within the TER trains there’s no machine to validate a ticket. You just need to be able to present the ticket when a person comes up to check tickets. Sometimes there used to be machines for validation before getting to your platform at the train station, but I haven’t seen them in use lately. And yes, that’s different for trams and buses where you actively need to swipe or show your ticket to the driver (bus). Well, that’s for regular tickets at least (not sure if the Pass Sud Azur Explore requires validation or whether it’s enough to have it on you 😳, need to check back with the company - but definitely try to swipe in tram, better safe than sorry 😉)

that was an incredibly informative video for me as i am so stressed when i am arriving in Nice to when i pick up a key for apartment....its at night so we have limited time to meet up for the key and will rely on taxi for sure. does the taffiff of 32 plus 4 euros apply to going into the old town....and does uber arrive promptly or is it a bit of a wait....i know you have to meet them somewhere else ...i have heard the taxis rip you off, but if the tarriff is fixed we would be greatful of that...
@rivierago
@rivierago 8 күн бұрын
Don’t stress! Nice is small for a big city, not as hectic as big capitals. People are laid back in general. We‘ve never taken a taxi ourselves, but we hear the drivers don’t always stick to the indicated fares… (please tell us if we’re doing you wrong, taxi drivers!). As for Uber or Bolt, that’s a smooth affair normally. But again, truthfully, we’re usually taking the car.

Hi Pavel and Edel, thanks for reaching out! Most restaurants should be open on Sunday, especially in the touristy areas they are open every day (old town, flower market, beach etc), but there are exceptions, that’s true too. We loved Bocca Nissa in the old town which we only recently tried out for the first time (you need to absolutely make reservations; for dinner they have a different menu than for lunch which we tried and loved). Safari is a safe bet (between good food and good prices). We can make more suggestions if you tell us what price range you’re looking for 😉

You’re talking about the Pass Sud Azur Explore? Not rechargeable, I’m afraid, at least not for one day, just the 3-7-14 day offers (if I remember correctly). For Italy you need an extra ticket anyway, so the best is probably getting a TER train ticket from Nice to your destination in Italy for that day.

Thanks a lot for the informative video! Really appreciate that! Just one question regarding the app. Since my partner and I will take the return flight from another city than Nice, we prefer to use the app instead of the pink card to skip the reimbursement. Do you btw know if I can purchase tickets for both of us via the app? I could only choose single or return ticket in the app but couldn’t find the option to add more passenagers as you could for the pink card. Just want to double check with you in case I missed it 😊 And if it’s not possible to buy tickets for others in the app, do you have any tips on where we can reimburse the pink card in the city center? Thanks in advance!

Hey, not a 100% sure to be honest since we use the card not the app. I should think you could just load as many tickets as you need on your app and then swipe it 2 times if there’s 2 people travelling. On our phones, the app only shows in French, that’s why we didn’t bother exploring and explaining it since we thought most of you guys wouldn’t speak French… our bad… 🫣 (calls for a remake of the video, noted!)

The old town itself is convenient because you’re in the middle of it all - but it can be loud and hot (in the summer).
