@19723020 hmmmm. Did you use jumper cables to attach to starter? Mine just won't turn the engine over. I pray something isn't two tight or something. It just sounds like it dosnt have the power it needs cause the engine is hard to turn over when it get to the top of compression stage.

My dad took one of these back in the late 70’s and stuck it in a shortbed reg cab c10 before diesel swaps were “cool” He’s told me multiple times how the toro flow would roll coal pulling hard 😂

I Leo Stohl RIP. Bought a brand new '64 GMC and installed a brand new 353 Detroit Diesel in it in 1964. That's the earliest one I've seen. But your Dad's is cool because it was a Toro Flow👍

If you ever worked on a GMC Superior “pusher” school bus you know exactly what these engines are. Back in the mid 80’s a bus about 15 miles out of town on a narrow country road lost the water pump late on a Friday afternoon, I was the only one left in the shop and really didn’t want to deal with it. So I went back to the shop, got a new pump out of parts and a can of the “green” Cat gasket cement. Loosened the 4 nuts and cracked the old pump lose with a small heel bar and a 4oz ball peen. While pushing in on the old pump I removed the mounting nuts, had the new pump in my other hand gobbed up with the gasket sealer(no gasket) pulled the old one off and jammed the new one in the hole and didn’t loose more than 2gallons of coolant. The whole thing from the 1st radio call u til the driver pulled the bus back into the yard was under 2hours. I took it apart and fixed it properly the next week, in the shop and out of the cold sleety rain.

A great engine. I have a 478 ci toro-flo in my 1968 transit bus which is a RV now, People confuse it with a Detroit Deisel, GM did a V-6 gasser in-house and decided to do a Deisel version for bus and trucks for the Michigan, Ontario and Eastern markets, Two problems though and beginning with the fact that people seldom followed the maintenance manual advisory and more sepcifically; that the head bolts required re-tourquing very 50,000 miles and secondly, the water pump capacity should be upgraded to a larger version. One quiet engine. Blows stack but once it is warm, she is like a quiet smiling sweet chubby woman hmmmnnn! No one wants to touch these but after looking for someone to work on it, I lucked out and found some brothers who I call the Deisel Brothers and they did the head gasket like it was a joy! The Toro was used in boats, buses, combibes, tractors and commonly found on agricultural lands to pump water and irrigate large field crops; as they are quiet, torquey, reliable and fuel efficient. 1970s BOAT engines (twins) BMW Chrysler Crusaders GM Tor-flow Volvo Penta Hope, WIng & Prayer 1970s BOAT engines (Single) GM 350, 454 and Ford 460 for smaller vessels (28 foot or less). 2 paddles and alot of understanding

This 478 is a special order, notice the “V-6” on the valve cover? Since it doesn’t say GMC that means this was a Chevy option that was sold. These are a lot scarcer than the regular D478s. Extremely hard to come by these days.

Incorrect, they were great engines. The redline was 3200rpms which was too high so they lowered to 2800 many people ran them all day every day at 3200. Only issue is head gasket failure if you don’t torque the heads occasionally (50,000 miles) the original Bosch injection pump had issues, but an upgraded unit was released that cured the problems.

One more thing, the power was damn near the same as the gas engines, find another non-turbo diesel that can make similar power to a gas engine of the same size.

Yep, especially if it came with a 305ci V6, I believe it’s a direct fit with the exception of intake and exhaust systems; the diesel has intake and exhaust on the outboard side of the heads to make room for the injection pump in the valley, being a 60 degree engine, there isn’t much room between heads.

My dad was a contractor back when the ToroFlows came out. I remember being at his warehouse one day (I was about 9 or 10 years old) when the local GMC salesman came by trying to sell a ToroFlow diesel flatbed truck to my Dad. I remember reading the sales brochure for the truck that the salesman left. My dad never bought one (it was a bigger truck than he needed), but he had a 1-ton GMC truck with the 305 gas V6 truck engine for years. I learned to drive a standard transmission on that truck. Oh, and I've loved diesels since I was a kid--I've owned several and I've been around diesel engines all that time since those days, from diesel automobiles all the way up to 4,400 hp diesel-electric railroad locomotives.
