I have a hunch about why Irish people would talk and teach in Gaelic, but text and write and read in English. First, Gaelic was never meant to be written in the Roman alphabet; it was meant to be written in Ogham... In written Gaelic, all the vowels are interpreted 'wrong': they all are to be pronounced a different way frpù what they were meant. And already, in English they were frqom the original Latin pronounciation, so that makes two! Also, there is the fact that English is the new Lingua Franca, that succeeded Latin. So yeah, nobody in the world will be able to avoid English anymore. Unfortunately, that has as a consequence that almost nobody in the world is able to speak such beautiful English as Stephen Fry. You really should make an online course to teach pretty English pronounciation, Mister Fry! Please do!

these have been awesome. My recommendation: You should cut each speech into its own video (so 8 new videos) so that it is clear who is who and it is easier to share a specific good speech. The shorter videos should do better with the algorithm.

Will the aristocrats and millionaires of the nation all be agreeing to forfeit their inheritance too? This is without doubt the biggest ever grab on freedom ever and an invitation to voluntary forced labor. Such a policy would make the poll tax riots look trivial. There would very likely be a full scale revolution. The boomer generation became wealthy at the expense of the quality of life of their offspring. Now the govt want to rob that generation out of their retirement funds too? A simpler solution would be to simply reduce or cancel the state pension for those who are set to inherit from their family which would save the nation a fortune.

This is, on the whole, a more balanced view than David Mitchell's view of Scottish Gaelic that he put out there that time. Stephen is quite fair to the Irish language here - but then, I'd have expected nothing less from a man of his considerable intellect 🙂 I don't speak Irish, but I can understand some of the written word because I'm learning Scottish Gaelic.

The disappearence of Irish is related to many phenomena which started from the English. Given the existence of Switzerland (4 languages spoken, one of them is Romansh, a dead language that was "resurrected" recently) and Israel (shall I remind you that the Modern Hebrew language was taught massively over the country with success?), we shouldn't ask ourselves "if" it's worth teaching a language or not. There is shame, not only towards the language, but towards the land as well. I've been to Ireland many times and at first I thought that... there was nothing. Many sites or artistic pieces are rotting under heavy industries as Manchán Magan explains in his latest book. Then there are many others which are being forgotten. Kinda sad, but lately I've been seeing much more interest. Maybe technology and Brexit will help to reduce the shame.
