Maybe this is fun for those who just want to appreciate, but it is not helpful for players who want to actually improve. The GM identifies themes and ideas but doesn't give the slightest sense of how we could ever make these wonders happen in our own games. I would downvote this clip but I won't out of respect..

Why on Earth does this only have 176 likes, and some Gotham or Botez clowns make a less than mediocre cringy 'chess content' video and they get 200.000 views in a few hours? Please explain that to me.

Karpow is an amazing man! I met him in 1997 and that was the highlight of my chess carreer. No, I didn't play him.

At 4:58 1. e5 Ng8 2. Qd5 puts tremendous pressure on black's position. Tal, Kasparov, & young Carlsen will be very dangerous in this position.

Even Karpov said in a confirmed interview...He stated that Fischer had a 60 to 40 % advantage to win the match. Karpov would have been destroyed and morally crushed by a 10-3 loss. Fischer would have beaten him in '78 also. No question about that !!.

Had Fischer played Karpov in 1975, under all of his conditions....Fischer would have no doubt, destroyed Karpov by at least 10-3. !!!. Fischer's physical stamina and aggressive style would have been way too much for Karpov to handle !!!

Toward the end, why would the Re1 be counted as an attacking piece but the Qb8 not be counted as a defending piece? It seems like those designations are a little arbitrary and post hoc, but if there is some concrete rule, I'd sure be interested in hearing it!

1:44 That cover was prophetic but not as much as legend has made it out to be. In the 60's Fischer was exclusively a 1. P-K4 player (Fischer didn't use algebraic notation). But he had already varied from it several times. He'd played an English against Polugaevsky, and a Larsen's Opening against, I think Mecking. He even played 1. P-Q4 against Hort in a Blitz game. Early in his career he often planed 1. N-KB3. It was absolutely on the cards that Fischer might vary from 1. P-K4 in the match, which is why the cover existed in the first place.

In a way Fischer was unlucky. When he won the title there hadn't been a really dominant champion since Capablanca. The ones since then had been First Among Equals type champs. By quitting in 1972 Fischer probably thought he could reasonably expect that that would continue for a long time afterwards. But right on his heels came Karpov, and then Kasparov, who exhibited similar levels of dominance, and for a lot longer than Fischer had, and then Carlsen after that. Starting with Fischer Dominant Champions became the norm again, with Fischer the least dominant of them, considering he never won a single game as world champion. Americans had dreamed of having a champion like Karpov, somebody who would enter every tournament in sight and win most of them. While Karpov wasn't exactly Mr. Personality, he wasn't always saying embarrassing things that had to be explained away either.

You can't play proper chess at 5 mins. World Championship matches are 4 or 5 hours for a reason. Also I wasn't sure if he was cheating by using both hands very quickly at the end. You should press the clock with the hand that moves the piece.

Karpov is the total antidote to Kasparov. He is a Russian gentleman. Calm, collected - no fuss or emotional dramatics. Also his style of play was crystal clear and positionally sound.
